Picard is the captain you want to prevent a war; Sisko is the captain you want if Picard fails.

"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing"

So Sisko did something.

Sisko didn't lose control after changing the plan from finding evidence to fabricating it.He lost control the instant Garak was involved. The evidence is simple. Every time there's a problem that Sisko is having problems with Garak tells him to manipulate the situation the exact same way he just manipulated Sisko in a previous scene.

He never contacted anyone on Cardassia, he only said he did and they died. He then told Sisko to present the forged evidence after stating that Starfleet lost good spies getting it. Bodies lend authenticity to what is being said.

The Bio-memetic gel was never to buy an authentic data rod, it was to make the bomb. Garak most likely already had the data rod. Instead, as mentioned, it could be used to create a bomb which had the chemical signature of explosives similar to those used by Cardassians, and therefore the Dominion.

The forger was never going to do a good enough job of faking the recording so it would pass scrutiny, especially by the Romulans. Garak knew this. It only had to be good enough to look authentic after going through an explosion. Furthermore, two men can keep a secret if one is dead. He was always expendable.

The biggest hiccup in the whole episode what the altercation at Quarks. This was the last chance Sisko would have to bail out of the plan, but he felt that he was in too deep. Instead he paid to keep it all quiet.

The instant Sisko turned to Garak, Garak had this planed out. He just had to do it, and not let Sisko in on the real plan until it was too late. Sisko for his part got played, hence why he was so angry when he realized it. By then it was far, far too late to say no. It had already happened and if the truth ever got out, the Federation would feel the wrath of the Star Empire at a time when it was already losing the biggest war it ever fought.

One dead senator (and entourage), one dead criminal, and the self respect of one officer in exchange for victory in the war. Garak was right. That was a small price to pay, unless you're one of the ones who died to pay it.

Garak's speech at the end lives rent free in my head.

Garak was 100% right when he told Sisko that Sisko came to him to do the things he knew he would never be able to do on his own. Garak lied to Sisko every step of the way to provide him with plausible deniability while also using Sisko to get everything he would need to force the Romulans into the war.

There were never any dead contacts, no one trading an Optilythic Data Rod for Biomimetic Gel, it was always just Garak. The only part of his plan he couldn’t manage on his own he gave to an expendable criminal, and even then the forged data rod was only meant to delay Vreenak long enough for Garak to plant a bomb on his shuttle and provide proof that it was the Dominion that did it.

Sisko probably never knew the truth about just how deeply involved his actions were in Vreenak’s death. By allowing Sisko to believe that he had gone rogue and turned forgery into murder, Garak also protected the future relations between the Federation and the Romulans. If Sisko’s plot ever came to light, he could honestly say he never ordered an assassination, only a deception. The onus of the Romulan’s ire would be Garak, who was disowned by his own people and acting alone.

Even if the plot was discovered, Garak will have helped save the Alpha and Beta Quadrants from subjugation, and he helped free his own people from Dominion rule. If he had to face trial and execution afterwards, he would have called it a bargain. 1 life for 2 quadrants of the galaxy and the freedom of his homeland

How do we know Garak wasn't lying about the dead contacts on Cardassia?  He was always a pragmatist.  He could've decided on the spot Sisko's plan wouldn't work; thus, it would've been a waste of his resources.  Hell, he could've been lying about the rod.  He could've already had it & just needed the gel himself for the bomb that took out Vreenak.  Never forget what a master manipulator Garak is.

I've never caught the analogy of Vreenak discussing the replicated drink and how it applies to the fake recording he's about to watch.  Well done.

In the pale moonlight was the episode that Sisko became my captain. 🎉🎉🎉🎉 I can live with that.

The accuracy of your cut-away clips are in a league of their own.   To me, it really shows an encyclopedic grasp of golden era trek.  Bravo.

When Ben says, "I'm making a new agreement," he's basically quoting Vader from Empire.

Those TV promos at the beginning of these never get old.

This one episode deserves an entire series of videos breaking down every aspect of it and what it’s doing to the characters, how it manipulates the audience and plays with expectations, and so much more.  This one episode has so much nuance and moral implications, and any analysis will inevitably be incomplete, but she does do a really good job in a short amount of time.

I was talking to a guy at work, and I dropped a little theory on him about this episode that blew his mind. I'm not sure it rises to that, but let me drop it here: When Sisko says, "I can live with it", that's his version of Picard's, "THERE ARE FOUR LIGHTS!" scene. And both were forced by a Cardassian to a Federation captain. In my opinion, DS9 is the best Star Trek series, taking nothing away from the TOS and TNG series, I love them both as well. This episode still sticks with me all these years later.

Considering that the Alpha Quadrant Alliance damn near lost the war WITH the Romulan on their side, it's for damn sure they'd have lost without them!
Remember, the war was only barely won with the heelturn of the Cardassia fleet - which.sybe added an extra ten percent to the allied forces.
The Romulan fleet was maybe a third of the allied forces (because they hadn't depleted themselves like the Federation and Klingons had by fighting each other).

No, without the Romulan, all would have been lost.

That Princess Bride cut about the pirate killing Wesley in the morning had me heaving omg

It didn't break one of the franchise's most sacred rules--O'Brien did not suffer.

25:06 - Garak’s speech was one of the best moments in the episode, along with the “I CAN live with it” meme.

I could probably watch a 4 hour compilation of just Star Trek TV bumpers and commercials. 😂

It's so refreshing to find a sane Trekkie that cares about the lore and continuity and just discusses episodes with video essays

Garak was lying about the dead operatives, he knew that was a fools errand from the start. He just wants to manipulate Sisko into going along with his plan. He even tells Sisko to say the exact same thing to Vreenak.
