Plug a solar panel into a wall outlet? Until recently, that was effectively illegal in all 50 states. Now a number of states have legalized it — and the Mango Power S Plug & Play Solar 1,200W Kit is one of the first complete systems built for this new era. In this video I set up the full kit myself (timed it!), explain how anti-backflow "zero-export" technology lets you offset your power bill WITHOUT net metering, break down the safety engineering — including why I used a dedicated outlet and hired an electrician for the Smart Gateway — and cover the wave of state laws (Utah HB 340, Virginia HB 395, and more) changing home solar in America.

The list in the video for where solar laws have passed is not completely accurate. For the most up to date list of where plug in solar laws have passed go here: https://www.brightsaver.org/is-plug-in-solar-legal

Warranty only works if they stay in business.

You can actually hang the panels vertically on the fence to save a lot of space. Do your own research on the feasibility on vertically hung panels. You'll be surprised.

As a former user of rooftop solar panels I can add my experience to this discussion. I’m not an electrician or an an engineer but I do have a working knowledge of electronics. My panels were installed in 2010 under a lease agreement and removed in 2025 when the lease expired. Things were great until 2020 when damage to the roof shingles began to appear. I attribute this to heat trapped between the panels and the roof. Costly repairs were needed. I live in Texas so excessive heat is a regular thing. If you live in a hot, sunny climate your panels will be less efficient on hot sunny days as the panels heat up.
I think these self installed panels are a great idea but costly and it will take some time to get a return on your investment.

For those that want to use a battery, there are other solutions that provide more features
Example: I have a growatt 3500 TL with a 48v battery pack. I have moved 4 critical circuits from the main panel to a panel serviced by the growatt.
The benefits are, when the power goes out, the critical circuits (fridges, internet, computers) are served by the battery. The growatt also has one mppt solar input to charge the battery.

The growatt can be configured to use the battery or use the grid as an input. It does cost more, but you get more.

The biggest problem with solar power is that too many companies are taking advantage of consumers by massively inflating the prices of the equipment and installation. The technology itself can be affordable, but these companies make it unnecessarily expensive for the average homeowner to make the switch.

You gotta love FL not allowing it when it should be the poster child for this.

Here in Europe we use Hoymiles microinverters a lot, a 400 Wp Panel plus Microinverter (like the HM-400) costs around 200 US Dollars (mounting materials not included), we have hundreds of zhousends of them in several countries, they are extremely reliable and produce huge amounts of clean power.
Definitely the way to go for small solar like balkony or other small installations as it is so easy to just plug them in and it works.

A sample financial / break-even analysis would have been great showing how much is offset by the appliances in your home or other sample home

Ecoflow has a 2kwh batter designed specifically for systems like this. Great way to capture some extra power from them. Just plug it into the wall inside the house.

4 KWh here in South Florida costs $.53 😢

Show us a video of you mowing around them.

People use to unplug and flip meters over so they would run backwards for part of the month. New meters count flow either way as consumption. If you export power, your bill will go up.

40 yr Electrician here. A breaker is basically a thermal device. As current flows it produces heat from the load’s resistance. They use a conductor between the utility power, and the load on the breaker calibrated to set off the thermal switch and the desired amperage. That why they don’t trip at exactly the amps the breaker is rated for. It’s normally a little more. Why a breaker may work on a load for a period of time before it trips ✌️

Pretty cool concept and tecnology. In my energy market without a battery its not a good return on investment but its a way better more easily obtainable option than grid tied A solar generator with about a 2kwh battery and 1200 w solar can be a better turn key option for the same price or less. Financially still not a good investment but it gives you security and options for critical things like medical, refrigeration and communication devices. its also fairly portable in the case of outdoor adventures or disasters etc. the ability to leverage the battery during peak times/rates can help with additional savings My set up with limited solar generates average of 15.00 a month. With a cost of around $2,300. Its a 12 year payback not counting equipment failure costs or electric rate increases. Factor not having to replace a fridge full of food and it pays for itself almost instantly.

Yes, what you describe is also called sometimes "ghost current".
If there's an appliance connected together with the solar system on the same breaker, the breaker can detect only the part drawn from the grid.
And if you do, just don't run more appliances than would trip your breaker without the solar system working.

im in Oklahoma. We have a plug in solar bill that has passed the house overwhelmingly but stalled in the senate before they recessed. it scheduled to be voted in at the start of the 2027 session. Im really excited to get this

Nice video!!! You should trying adding a diy battery setup with it to see how well it would work might make things more appealing for how expensive this setup is. Or even using a different solar set up withe the throddeling mechanism that came in the kit. Thanks for the video!!!

breaker works both ways . I learn this when I installed a very large system where the two inverters are combined though a breaker panel that is run in reverse.
