Thank you for this. I am a longtime watcher of your videos (white) and I have so much respect for you for posting this and highlighting the more disturbing things, which I feel like SO MANY white people in America want to sweep under the rug. American slavery was especially morbid, and we need to sit with that morbidity and absorb the Black American existence.

Modern slavery may be outlawed (mostly) but is still a global industry worthy of it's own compilation. The pro-slavery people never changed their minds on the issue. If it were made legal again tomorrow, there'd be plenty of people eager to buy into it.

What action

As a Nigerian, I wish this vidoe had more research. It's sad how little objective knowledge of the history of sIavery is available. It has existed everywhere. It existed here in Africa long before Europeans came. Our ancestors did it to each other and even Arab sIave trade simply used the existing one in Africa as a basis, as did the Europeans. Ironically l, the Europeans were one of the few peoples who actually made an effort to abolish the practice but the Arabs and some African cultures (the Dahomey for example) actually tried to continue it.

Why did we take down some statues but not Washington or Jefferson?

Speaking as a woman of white and Cherokee, my family still speaks of things that happened to my family ancestors. My great great grandmother,who was full Cherokee, married a white man. That was an absolute no no back then. It's like KKK members marrying a black woman. My mom has told me most of the things that she can remember and I have passed it on to my children. I was the first woman, since my grandmother, to marry someone outside of my race. I taught my boys of all parts of their heritage. I was very educated of black culture, Cherokee culture, and of course, white culture. We had one of those DNA tests done, just to see how much was what. My oldest son has taken it a little further to try and find out as much as possible. We're still waiting on his research. I never believed that my children should feel like they were just black, because that's how "society " sees them. I am proud of my ancestors and I believe it's very important for our children to know the good and bad of their backgrounds. It is our responsibility to let them know exactly where they come from.
