This looks exactly like the irs in a Maserati Quattroporte iii. Considering how many parts come from other cars, I’m thinking they just got this straight from Jaguar. I’m happy to see these videos because there’s nothing for the Quattroporte.

Rubber bushes and geometry allowed rear steer for the whole axle subframe, all the wheels stay parallel this improves the handling. Needle bearing are used in the lower links and obviously in the universal joints meaning the suspension is very compliant twin coil springs reduce suspension height and all the moving noisy bits are in the suspension subframe which is isolated by rubber bushes from the body. Driving it means you are floating along with very low noise vibration and harshness. I Remember driving XJ6 s when they were relatively new and they were super smooth.

This is perfect timing.  My calipers are leaking and I need to do a complete IRS overhaul on my '90.  Would love to see a teardown and rebuild!!

I know this was 2 years ago?  But let me offer a suggestion.    It would be FUN to watch the cleaning and the rebuilding of the Rear axle and suspension assembly / unit.   People are into that.

You probably know this, but that diff is the so called Dana unit, used only from 85 thru 87. Salisbury units were used before and after. You can tell which it is from the square pinion flange, and the lack of a drain plug on the Dana. Parts are almost non-existent. You can't replace just the output flange seal, you have to change the entire bearing, if you can find it. It's also extremely expensive plus hard to change. There are two external o-rings that can be changed that are between the bearing carrier and the body of the diff, if that's what's leaking. Frankly, you'd be better off if you have a Salisbury diff, and refurb it instead. Parts are readily available. All of the HE diffs were 2.88:1 with the TH400 tranny, so Salisburys aren't hard to find. I'm going thru the same thing, and I'm dumping the Dana. Here's a link to what it takes the rebuild the Dana:

If you ever get around to the outboard swap, I'd love to see that.  Might I also recommend speed bleeders for the calipers?  Love those things.   IMHO helps in the rear especially with the tight access.   I suppose the next level beyond the outboard swap, is alternate ways to control diff & control arm movement (Lister, TRW, DB7, JagSport) from small to large modifications.
