On November 19, 2021, Rockstar Games published an apology for a broken launch. Five years to the day later, the same company ships the most anticipated video game ever made. Can anything survive that much hype?
GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 set the bar at 97 on Metacritic and a billion dollars in three days, so anything short of legendary now reads as failure. This video looks at the four ways a launch this big dies — the wait (Duke Nukem Forever), the promise gap (No Man's Sky), the hardware gap (Cyberpunk 2077) and the network (Rockstar's own GTA Online and Trilogy launches) — and at how every one of them has been engineered out of GTA VI. What's left is the one thing no studio can engineer.
