Gonna say this right now, the story with Bob being the most beloved hero and his player showing up so drunk he immediately pukes makes a pretty interesting plot.

Think about it; a group of adventurers hear about this mythical hero beloved in the world, but when they go to meet him, they're met with this belligerent drunkard who's first words upon meeting them is "What do you want!?" promptly followed by him heaving his mead dinner all over the porch

Unbiased Story.
DM: "I am unbiased."
Every player and NPC everywhere in every campaign: Cough Cough BOUHLSHEET Cough BOUHLSHEET Cough

I think the Bob plot line would have been so much better if "Bob" turned out to be a hopeless pathetic drunk hobo in the streets ... not in the house ...

The amount of DMPC horror really makes one never want to even consider using them even with good intent

'He was in the background petting his farting cat.' Made me laugh far more than it should.

That "unbiased DM" story is so infuriating, I sincerely hope it was completely made up.

Unbiased Story. Aside from my other comment about this story. The DM in this story is really giving up a lot themselves here. Erasing the last 3 years of what the party did kills a lot of other plot lines the DM could have furthered to continue the game way further than just one story. As a DM you have an entire world out there filled with others. Other lands, peoples, and importantly BBEG's. How they have reacted to the events caused by your players over that time can lead to some amazing stories and give the players a feel that the world is alive and they effect it greatly.

Example, say the party does stop the Necromancer or Lich from rising to power and creating an empire of the dead. That might have helped a nearby green dragon that expanded their influence and control in the power vacuum of the former BBEG's departure. Or maybe a rival elven kingdom wants to reclaim the land now that the human kingdom is weakened. They might even be doing it to heal the land of the blight of death, it's just unfortunate the humans don't see it that way. Or maybe there are merchants from far away lands coming into the kingdom with cheap goods to aid the recovery, and secretly taking over the thieves' guilds in several cities and towns.

All kinds of possibilities are destroyed when you just want to win as a DM.

I have to say, the idea of having a legendary hero that already beat the big bad guy before is a great idea. Because that way it gets rid of the chosen one trope out of the way so now the players can feel like they're the chosen one.

As someone who's had 70% of my spells not work rights before as a dragonborn sorcerer due to poor rolls or the dm make the saves, trust me, it can be difficult to deal with.

Story one..  Yeah, if I was railroaded that hard, only to meet this 'great hero' character player who I didn't care about in the first place, and then he's already drunk off his rocker...  I'm leaving.  If I have to explain why this is unacceptable to someone, that person is almost certainly too deluded to learn.
Story two..  The number of times I've had to explain to people "I am not my character.  My character cannot see the dice, or read the text on this paper, or hear the phrasing of the DM's narration...  People just don't get it.  But I guess some people can't imagine playing a character that isn't just "Me but with a sword and magic".  That all said, I did once play a character in a text based RP who had the ability to perceive spelling errors.

Of all the horror stories
The tale of Bob is just hilarious

The savior of worlds, slayer of gods, the epitome of absolute altruistic heroism, the universe cannot function without Bob

And upon finally meeting the man, he's this salty drunk crank who immediately hurles whatever he was drinking, just to wash it down with whatever he was drinking

The "Out of Character" story is an example of why I dislike it when DMs make low rolls out to be complete incompetence on the part of the PC. Like a level 20 fighter, monk, etc. shouldn't have a 1/5 chance to stab their ally, break their own weapon, hurt themself, or fall prone on their turn over the course of making their 4 attacks. 🙄

Much more likely and a much better way to ratchet up the tension most of the time, is to describe these as those moments where blades are clashing and bodies are weaving in and out of range, the way you see in movies. Not every attack is going to land in an action scene and that's OKAY! It can still be cool, it doesn't NEED to be ruined for a joke.

I wanna say that, as a member of the Bob Gang, we do not claim this individual and we fully condemn this kinda crappy behavior.🗿🚬

The moment the "Bob" bs started up I would have left on the spot.

I also have doubts the GM would have learned anything if the players had talked to her about their reasons for leaving. It sounds like she wasn't competent on  a basic level.

Figures a doge is servant to a bunch of cats!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣no, but I have a Feline Overlord, as well, she rules with an iron paw🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

The DM in the first story sounds REALLY inexperienced and socially inept.

The one in the second story. I mean it is hard to put two player groups against each other and have it be fun and not cause hurt feelings anyway. The fact that ALL the DM's overpowered NPCs and the these sudden gotcha mechanics supported the "good" group means that any claims of fairness were just gaslighting.

I feel it's worth saying that the fact that a player just got yoinked out of the game without a save and couldn't participate at all in the next one is reason enough for me to quit. No way I'm playing a game where the dm has no qualms about doing that to a random player on a whim. It's such a colossal breach of the social contract everyone is following to play this game, devoting hours and hours to this group activity, that I just wouldn't even associate with them anymore. Imagine doing that to someone anywhere else. Like your friends invite you to a restaurant but if you eat or talk at all, you gotta go. At least, according to the person hosting the get-together. That'd be insane, right?

The drunk guy story was new to me. I've seen my fair amount of shit in many of my campaigns, but I've never seen anyone keel over drunk before (well, not during a DnD campaign at least). Another thing to add to my: 'I hope to never see this in person' list

More dog talk time, hooray!
