Who is the villain of this movie? Is Val the worst or is Matt just WRONG!?!?

Fun fact: Nathan Lane was still not publicly out when this film came out, and he was worried that in an interview with Oprah about the film would end up with her asking if he was gay. But Robin Williams assured him he would protect him if he wasn’t ready to come out, and during the interview redirected any questions implied Lane was gay to himself

The reason Albert wanted the Palimony agreement is that it was illegal for them to get married. So what people would do is Contractually bind them selves together. You can reproduce a lot of the right of a married couple with split assets and Powers of Attorney.

Dianne Wiest saying "Someone has to like me best!" hits me so hard. She adds so much to every movie she's in even though she's often a side character.

Actually if you listen real close in the scene where she is telling her parents she is getting married he says "You're not even 19" not 18, it just sounds similar.

I’m straight but I still want to see a day when “out” isn’t necessary anymore. You just show up for Christmas dinner with whoever you’re with and nobody makes a big deal about it. It’s movies like this that will hopefully help. The portrayal of Robin and Nathan’s relationship isn’t sensationalized. The palimony scene on the waterfront is perfect because it’s not overdone. It’s just 2 dudes that are basically married recommitting their lives to each other.

Nathan Lane's scream when he's spreading butter on the toast is one of the funniest things I've ever seen on film. Freaking love that scene!

Somebody probably already said it, but the costume Nathan lane is wearing at the pool house is clearly a scene from Easter Parade, with Judy garland and Fred Astaire.

The “hobo-like” character Starina is dressed as is Judy Garland dressed for partnered  performance number in the movie Easter Parade.

When Nathan Lane came out in the Tramp outfit, that was an homage to a famous performance by Judy Garland. Also, please keep in mind that the age of consent is different from state to state; it's not universally 18, and is sometimes as low as 16. Additionally, many states have what are called Romeo & Juliet laws, which allow sexual relationships between young people who are between certain goalpost ages, such as ages 16 and 23. In the U.S., rights are staggered and different from state to state. For example, 16 for a driver's license; 17 for the age of consent; 18 for voting, the draft, and contracts; 21 for alcohol, etc.

I went through my 20s in the 90s, and it's hard to really get across how it was back then. You two are looking at this through the eyes of this generations 20s. So instead of trying to describe what it was like I will say this. This movie came out in 1996, and Matthew Shepard was beaten and killed in 1998. Val was wrong for asking that of them (but did redeem himself in the end). It is just that I understand, and had to 'play it straight' for friends of mine to help them out cause they had helped me out.

Starina was a dress brand. I had one in the 90's and I wore it until it didn't fit anymore because I loved Nathan Lane in the Birdcage so much.

Nathan lane outfit was Rosalind Russell in Auntie Mame , the clown outfit was Liza Minnelli from her stage . The original film was French and it was hysterical

Not only is Hank Azaria one of my favorite parts about this movie (that I saw 5 times in the theater), but I half assume Agador Spartucus was born and raised in New Jersey. He's THAT theater kid who decided his parents came from Guatamala (they're also native New Jersey folks) and he put on this accent in high school to impress a boy and it stuck. When he moved to South Beach to be a drag queen, he just kept up the schtick. That's my take, anyway... had it for almost 30 years and I refuse to believe otherwise. Every time I trip, at least three of us will say, "My chooz make me fall down." Also, I said, "F*ck the chrimp" in a restaurant once at a business function and no one laughed. I said, "Clearly y'all have never seen 'The Birdcage' and it shows!" Straights.

And the sad part is they're actually considering laws like the Nathan Lane was proposing as Albert in places like Texas and other Red States.

You should see the ending of the original French picture. I agree with the husband on my left, it would've helped if Senator Keeley would've come to the realization on his own that the Goldmans were now part of the family and at least make peace with that. The other husband, however, is also right that by going to the wedding, Senator and Mrs. Keeley have at least made peace with the idea that Barbara is marrying the son of a same sex couple. In the French version, Deputy Charrier (the Senator Keeley in this story) tries escaping in drag with the crowd leaving the drag show at the bar below, but his wig falls off and the media exposes him wearing drag.
