My favourite treat from the Netherlands is the gevulde koek. I don't understand why it's not more well known. Every time I visit I grab them every time I see them. I stayed in Leiden a month and must have eaten 100. So glad you liked them!

Stroop is pronounced like rope with st in front of it.

This is so funny as a Dutch we do shopping in Germany because all the delicious food of Germany has we don't get in the Netherlands.
And thank you calling it the Netherlands and not Holland.

It's almond..the stuff in "de gevulde koek", we call it "spijs"..often combined with speculaas, in december.. than it's called "gevuld speculaas", so good with coffee!

I fondly remember my youth - in Venlo there were always these wonderful, slightly sweet matjes rolls with chopped onions.

Hey baker since 2008 here!, loved the vid, I have some advice though for future content.
I recommend asking for specialities in bakeries you visit.
Cause from looking at the products you tried, I can only pick out 3 that aren't being made by big factories and then being bought and resold in the shops.
You're really missing out on the good stuff cause while yes it can still be delicious i can guarantee that most of the products the bakeries actually make inhouse will taste a lot better and more authentic

The bike culture is crazy in the Netherlands, and the bakeries have some interesting and very tasty pastries ❤

"To breed" in English is etymologically related to the Dutch "broed".

The English "to breed" comes from Old English "brēdan", which meant "to nourish," "care for," or "bring forth." This verb is derived from the same Germanic root as the Dutch "broed".

In English, "to breed" developed the meaning of producing or raising offspring or plants.

The same root also appears in words like "bread" (the result of rising or fermenting) and "brood" (the offspring of birds or animals).

Interesting how these ancient roots evolved in different ways!

Thanks that you visited my hometown. 😇

Next time you eat a tompouce, take the top off and put it underneath the tompouce. 😎
And take it in you're hand to eat it.😜

Greetings from Venlo

Great to see this you trying dutch treats. Although the originals of worstenbroodje, bosche bol, vlaai en stroopwafels are far superior to factory made products.

@larskeizer 1 year ago

The last "gevulde koek" are filled with almost paste which, while indeed similar to marzipan, has less sugar and more almond. Ironically it used to be the "poor man's marzipan" in the Netherlands because both sugar and high-quality almonds were more expensive than the almonds used in almond paste

I can eat a stroopwafel at any time of the day, it's my favourite cookie!
From the bakery I like amandelbroodje (sweet) and saucijzenbroodje (savoury) the best.

My favourite Dutch bakery item is Fries suikerbrood (Frisian sugarbread) but you can only buy the real artisanal version up North. You can sometimes find the factory made ones in other parts of The Netherlands and they are good as well.
