My mother's complete house rules: https://sukitanaka.com

In Kyoto, the rainy season lasts about six weeks, and the laundry dries inside. My mother's towels never smelled sour, and in forty-one years of keeping a house in Ohio, mine haven't either.

In this video, I share eleven Japanese rules for drying laundry indoors without that musty smell. We begin with the laundry basket and the detergent cap. Then we move through the washer door, the pinch hanger, the fan, and the wool sweater. We finish with three quiet systems: the five-hour clock, the small daily load, and kanki, the Japanese habit of changing the air.

None of these rules need sprays, scented beads, or stronger soap. Most of them cost nothing, and you can start one tonight with a towel you already own.

If your laundry has smelled damp for years, please remember this. Your house was never the problem. Nobody taught you the rules.

Tell me in the comments which rule your house breaks the most.
