Fatal Frame 4: The Terrifying Lost Chapter (that Nintendo Abandoned)

After finishing the PS2-trilogy of Fatal Frame, I just couldn't get enough of the series and decided to play the never-released-in-the-West Lost Chapter of the saga: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse that came out for the Ninteno Wii exclusively in Japan in 2008. For how obscure and forgotten it is, this is a surprisingly brilliant and brutally overlooked survival horror title. Co-directed by none other than Goichu Suda aka Suda 51, it’s a brilliantly crafted, soil-your-pants-scary, genuine Fatal Frame that brings a handful of new innovations to the formula, including claustrophobia-inducing over-the-shoulder camera and hauntinly immersive motion controls, and the fact that Nintendo lets it rot in their vaults is an *unpunished capital crime*.

* I’d actually love to hear who of you HAS played Fatal Frame 4: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse;
either with the fan translation on an emulator or a modded Wii, or even in the Japanese original.
Let me know! I’m craving data!

I had to play this title on Japanese, and I had to memorize the menu to upgrade the camera and such, also had to read the story online while I was playing so I wouldn't miss any part of the plot, and I definitely have to agree, this is one is the best installments on the series. I really hope Fatal frame Maiden of the black water sells good, there's still a ton of fans out there, and we're dying for a new chapter on the series.

I appreciated when YouTuber GrimBeard described Fatal Frame as being one of the “three fuckers” of triple-A horror in the early 2000s (alongside Silent Hill & Resident Evil )

Ragnar I’ve just got to say this: thank you for showing that “piracy” can sometimes just be people trying to preserve what the big companies won’t.
I’ve never actually played Fatal Frame 4 but now that I’ve got a good way of doing so I’ll definitely be checking it out!

My favorite part of every Ragnar video is the section where it goes, "Okay, and this is how you commit Crimes."

Fatal Frame is truly my favourite brand of horror, as are the Silent Hill games: Games where the monsters are not angry. They are sad. And you're about to join them in their depressing afterlife.

Thankfully, Fatal Frame 4 is finally being localized, and being released on Switch. 😁

Update: It has been announced that Fatal Frame 4 will get a port for the PS4, PS5, XONE, Series X, Switch and PC. We deem boys

This one is about to go from the least played to probably one of the most played in the series soon

I want a Fatal Frame collection (and Fatal Frame 6) so badly.

I remember this one well it spawned my still somewhat hatred of Nintendo to this day. My friend setup his Wii and on my birthday he managed to get it to working. So I played Fatal Frame IV to the fullest it was exciting and so wonderful. I still find it criminal this one is still locked away.

I've been looking forward to this video! I'm so happy to see Mask of the Lunar Eclipse getting some of the recognition it deserves. I was one of the group that helped out with the patch, and it's still one of my favourite games ever - every time I play it I'm still blown away by how much care and attention went into the design. I'm really hoping that if the Maiden of Black Water port does well they might finally consider an official release in some form. 🙏
