Lust for Life was the first Lanas political album, there’s a line before and after this project. Actually, the first half of the album is like the “old Lana” and the second half is like the “new Lana”, the one who talks about politics, poetry, feminism, the future, getting older and living the simple life. It’s a transitional album for me.

Lust for Life is definitely a top 3 album of lana for me. It has grown over me so much.

I feel like Lana is apolitical and mostly just interested in her own pleasure and pain, which is one reason she’s so great. I think she’s decadent and any political statement she might make would just be lip service to appease her fans. Nice video!

Heroin, 13 Beaches and White Mustang are my favorite

Dare I say it’s her best album and if not the most defining Album of her career but yall aren’t ready for that convo!

Your analysis is so deep, insightful and introspective, I'm literally in love here!! WE NEED HER WHOLE DISCOGRAPHY PLEASEEEE

I love how you looked at Lust For Life in a critical manner. I think you’re so right about what it is and it doesn’t make me like the album any less than I did before. ❤

Quick correction: 'Lana del Rey' is not a character hut rather a new image. Lizzy Grant (her former stage name) also cling back to nostalgia. This was always a part of her artistic identity. So it's more like how lounge and jazz divas of the 40s and 50s present themselves on stage. Gaudy and theatrical for a song but not necessarily a character.
She did however, had a character named Carmen for the song with the same name and in 24, she impersonates Nancy Sinatra.

I think it's important to mention some of the earlier drafts of the songs and the early tracklist of the record because it somewhat emphasises the feeling of being torn between the past and the contemporary time, as well as political themes, though features more personal imput on the topic with draft titles like "Right Reasons" and "Good Intentions", though also some borderlime nihilism such as the draft "End Of An Era" and "Something Real".
For example, the demo of Lust For Life talks more about how she feels the time is unstable and she feels trapped in it.
The demos also generally have a more eery witchy production than the released versions.

I love you Lana Del Rey inspired fit ❤

off topic but I love the flowers in your hair!

Question For The Culture

31:19 This comment made me think and realize that the song by Bo Burnham which he released during the covid shutdown, "all eyes on me", follows the same chord progression as the intro to love and thus this album

People really hate this album when in reality this is some of Lana's Best Work like songs like Beautiful People, Get Free these are standouts in her career, sure the album is not cohesive and is a mess but you gotta enjoy how Expiremental Lana went with this album!

Oh No!  The contemporary American Landscape!

Great video. Its such a pertinent retrospective on this album, an album that people often forget in the shadows of Born to Die and NFR. Your comment on its duality between pomo American politics and personal introspection/anxiety makes me recall the postmodern ennui that I feel is the foundation of this album's most ambitious themes. She could deal no longer in the terms and flirtations of pastiche that she loves and had to find a way to speak to the resounding moment in American politics. With the messiness of LFL, I think Lana was able to properly experiment with her artistic political standing, which was not explicitly political and definitely not activistic, but rather observational. NFR was such a success on the lyrical fronts because she found her place in the sociopolitical moment through these poetic observations and critiques about American masculinity, the American dream, etc. while authentically remaining fond of American aesthetics. (This perfectly aligns with the title blaspheming American observational/realism painter Norman Rockwell).

Didn't mean to write such a long comment but thanks again for the great video!

woah its like you made this video just for me !

CANT WAIT TO WATCH THIS

I love your video essays sm! your thoughts are so interesting!

24:31 I always thought of God Bless America - And All the beautiful women in It more as an ironic song making fun of the political landscape at the time rather than an attempt to make a patriotic-esque song, specially because of the use of gunshot sounds and the lyrics “Even walking alone, I'm not worried” while also poking fun at the “Free Land” ideology of the US
