Dr. Swafford is a kindhearted, amiable man. I enjoyed his lectures when he was teaching at the Boston Conservatory. His knowledge of Beethoven, Brahms and Ives is encyclopedic!

Great conversation! An interview with someone who actually read the book. Also great to hear someone with a knowledge and appreciation for the recorded history, which I find all too rare.

This is marvelous - I love the chance to hear Jan talk about music of all types, and this is a great one! Thank you for recording it; a gem of humanism that is a balm to my soul in these turbulent times.

12:28:  "And the simplicity of these things is one of the reasons they can be worked into so many things."  THAT IS THE ESSENCE OF BEETHOVEN.  Thank you, Jan.  Beethoven's performances are remarkable.  Beethoven's emotional gravity is unbelievable.  But you never, ever want to stray from the simplicity of Beethoven.  THAT...is his genius.

Thanks for the fascinating, wide-ranging conversation. I'm pretty sure I've never heard Beethoven, Bach, Kant, John Coltrane, Woody Herman, and Chick Corea included in the same discussion. Your expansive interests are a credit to you both and an inspiration to those of us who had the pleasure of listening in.

Love Jan and this discussion so much!! Thank you ✨

Wonderful conversation. And Jan is amazing. His insights, gained with the eye, ear and mind of a composer, are invaluable. Thanks to you both.

Great conversation on Beethoven’s last sonata, life and work — truly insightful! 🎶 Looking forward to many more. Thank you!

I appreciate the obsession that people have over with an incarnation of mine, the information that has been written down, the thoughts that people share, it helps me to reconnect with what I lost.

I have a handful of people that know about my past, and one among them was essential for my spiritual development.

Spirituality is absolutely necessary in order to reconnect with the divine. This world here is shrouded in chaos. My mission still stands, I want to see the world heal. Like how I wanted my soul to heal.

Just awashed in beauty, truth and love.

This is an amazing conversation!

Wonderful conversation! I just ordered Mr. Swafford's Beethoven!

I enjoyed the conversation. Thank you!
The blind organist was Helmut Walcha.

I remember going to a recital in NYC where Pollini played a program of Schoenberg, Stockhausen and the Hammerklavier sonata. What was most striking was that the Beethoven work seemed by far the most modern of the pieces in every sense of the word. I was familiar with the other works and liked them in isolation but next to the Beethoven they seemed quite trivial and dated, whereas the Beethoven sounded so new and alive.

I think Gulda in the clip is playing the Moonlight on a modern piano, but he's remarkably close to the sound of a period piano holding the pedal down. It's a unique and lovely atmosphere.

CHANNELING INVOLVES BEING IN A TRANCE!!!! THAT'S HOW THE MUSE WORKS THROUGH THE HUMAN VESSEL!

You can listen to jazz as much as you want too, but it won’t make you jazz musician unless you study and analyze jazz. As well as having a talent for playing it. So there are lot of ingredients that go into being a jazz musician. However, there are some people who have learned the classics but turned to jazz later. But once they made the change, they never went back to being a classical pianist!

Here are two highly educated men having a very wide-ranging conversation about music ... such that occasionally they lose the thread! But they are certainly interesting and have so much to say

Es una pena 😔 que este vídeo NO ESTÉ SUBTITULADO al ESPAÑOL...🇪🇦🤷😠🇪🇦

Very interesting discussion. I would be interested to have both your opinions of the BBC documentary the Genius of Beethoven on youtube which strikes me as very well done (good Welsh actor). Does the portrayal there fit your notions of the man? By the way, was Beethoven interested in literature and painting? I have the impression he was simply working all the time (when he was not going on about politics)....That Arietta played by Kempff is killingly beautiful...

Brahms wrote a ton of choral and vocal music.  He was a choir director for a while.  So the whole "pure music" thing with Brahms is overdone
