I watched this when it happened. It was 5am or something, but I couldn’t sleep, and managed to catch it. Anand had calculated everything correctly in the Qd1 line, and saw that for Qd1 the knight interposing was better, the Bishop interposition being a draw, but had a mental block that the knight was still on g3 (if he interposed with the knight) so in his mind’s eye, Qe1 wasn’t a thing. Of course it was an obvious blunder, which everyone saw immediately, so there was nothing special about Magnus’ move, but it’s interesting how even a top super gm can have a mental slip like that.
what an instructional game if I ever saw one and I''m 80 years old and have played since I was 5. It just destroys all that I held dear like ALL his peaces are STILL on the back rank in the Middle game. How is this not a Brilliancy of the ages?
Always love the commentary, but here it seems more like the nuclear move was Knight to F1 instead of Bishop to F1 for white. Magnus found the nuclear follow-up to a nuclear blunder.
