In 1969, the first Vidmar Memorial Tournament was held in Ljubljana. It featured 10 Grandmasters—including the legends of Yugoslav chess Svetozar Gligoric and Aleksandar Matanovic, one of Germany’s strongest players, Wolfgang Unzicker, and Romanian champion Florin Gheorghiu, who had defeated the great Bobby Fischer just three years before.
Alongside them were 3 International Masters and 3 untitled players.
Of course, everyone expected one of the Grandmasters to win. But first place was taken by a 25-year-old untitled player who worked in a local bicycle factory.
Every day, after finishing his hard day's work at the factory, he hurried to the tournament and defeated one Grandmaster after another, creating one of the biggest sensations in chess history.
That player was none other than one of the most creative chess players ever—Albin Planinc.
In this video, we’ll examine one of his most spectacular games from that tournament, which he won in just 28 moves.
