HOW HIS DAUGHTER AND A PROBLEM STUDENT INSPIRED MARTY MUSIC ON YOUTUBE
“When I had my daughter, I’d do things like record her with a camcorder running around in her fairy costume, and think, ‘How do I share this with the grandparents? Oh yeah, I'll put the video on YouTube.’ But here's where the ‘family’ YouTube channel eventually became Marty Music. I had a guitar student who wouldn’t practice what I’d teach him. I got all the classic teenager excuses, and he’d say, ‘Well, I couldn’t remember how it went.’ So, I’d record stuff like the ‘Fire’ lick by Jimi Hendrix at the original tempo and real slow to ensure he could see it and practice to it. I also told him I’d check how many views it got to confirm how many times he watched it. Then, I was like, ‘Wait a minute. This is a really good idea. I can do this with every student.’”
