If 10 collectors watch the same 4K on 10 different TVs and players, are they really watching the same presentation?

Should not have to buy the same movie like 5 times.

Constantly needing to convince myself “oh yeah, this looks way better”😵‍💫

I remember when studios would allow customers to upgrade to a new version of some titles by sending proof of purchase tabs to a specified adresse and they would get a discount for the new version.

The lack of standard has been a problem for all digital content since its mass deployment.  There wasn’t even a standard for film prints.

Been my problem since I’ve started buying 4K’s. I shouldn’t have to customize my settings for every movie I toss in.

The HDR on 4Ks is the reason I have stayed with blu-ray over the years.

I watch my 4K movies on my PS5 and they look amazing with just the HDR and no Dolby vision.

Man, I miss the good old days of VHS. Put that sucker in the player and LOVE the grainy, soft picture because it’s all we had 😂

Sounds like a commercial for Sony tvs

I just bought a panasonic ub820 and I love how it automatically switches to HDR10, HDR10+ , and Dolby Vision. My tv supports all 3 formats. HDR10 movies in filmmaker mode looks fantastic. My TV has a Dolby Vision Dark mode and the picture quality on DV movies look incredible. The picture and colors will look strange if the movie is HDR10 and your player automatically converts it to DV. Gotta turn off DV for HDR10 movies.

Because Blu-ray with it's better prints (and usually less cropping) was perfectly adequate PLUS you need a special player to play 4K.

The recent Rambo collection amazon exclusive 4k re-release was such a bummer for those who bought the prior versions that were released a few years ago.. the new release has a better transfer yet it,s not available to purchase. 😔

I don't have the problems you describe with Dolby Vision -- my Panasonic OLED TV and UB-450 seems to handle it extremely well. My biggest two issues with 4ks are more connected to the physical media itself, and related to one another: disc fragility/reliability and the "degassing" problem. On the reliability, 4ks are more likely than either Blu Rays or DVDs to glitch out with even the tiniest smudge or scratch -- it takes very, very little to cause them problems. That's why the second problem (degassing) is so maddenly stupid. For the industry to continue putting the discs inside black plastic cases that have a tendency to build up greasy crud and smudge ... to house a media format infamously vulnerable to replay problems at the slightest hint of smudge... is pretty inexcusable. I don't know if the fragility problem could be fixed with a thicker protective layer on the disc (a la Blu Ray), but the second problem seems like it should have been sorted out by the 4k format's tenth birthday. Until I see some improvement, I treat blu ray as my archival "keep-it-forever" format and just cross my fingers that the 4k discs will last for the long haul.

Oh man, I had no idea they were putting out different versions of 4k disks with different processing. I just started buying 4k disks because I have a 4k Sony WX5000 projector with a 135" screen and want the best results, and I can't believe they are putting out different versions of the disks. My Sony projector doesn't do Dolby Vision natively, but it has all of that great Sony processing, so everything still looks amazing. Now I guess I need to do some A/B tests with some disks. Why do they have to make this stuff so complicated?

It´s gotten way more complicated for sure with 4K and the added "boosts".

I hate all those settings on my 4K TV so much. We have become WAY too spoiled. I miss the days of CRT TVs and VHS players, when you just plugged everything in and watched. Nowadays it's color adjustment, edge smoothing, dynamic tone mapping, dynamic this, dynamic that, hdr, dolby vision, soon we'll have dolby vision plus, etc. It's frustrating. I calibrated my TV to what experts say and I STILL watch movies with that "are these REALLY the best settings" thought in my head.

I don't have Dolby Vision but even still, the Dolby Vision/Atmos version of Jurassic Park looks much better on my HDR TV

Same happens with Apple TV, is not just a Blu-Ray thing, it is Dolby, depending on the TV the processing will always try to not clip highlights and if the mastering isn't done properly it will result on a dark picture, if the TV has higher nit Brightness DV is less restrictive. HDR10 just doesnt mess with the picture cuz it doesn't matter what TV do you have.

I had something similar to what I think you are describing when watching Pacific Rim (77in LG G3 x UB450). Shadows, while super crisp and lifelike, felt way too dark in Dolby Vision even in a pitch-black room. I have all my settings set to the recommended, but when I switched gamma mode from BT.1886 to 19, it immediately looked correct without killing shadows or blacks. This is the only title I've had to make an adjustment for in this way.
