OTHER CORRECTION ABOUT YIIK:
Yeah I messed up LOL in all honesty its been a long time since I've sat down and played YIIK, and as a result my take on the game was kind of inaccurate. As a lot of people in the comments pointed out, I didn't play the I.V update which, from what I understand, addresses a lot of the issues present in the original release of the game. Fair to say I was too harsh on the game especially since I was working from an outdated playthrough of the game.

Now, with that said, I still think its really messed up to recreate her final moments shot-for-shot, and I still think the game is AN example of what you shouldn't do when adapting real world tragedy in your game. But I admit, its not the WORST example and that was definitely a stretch for me to make a definitive claim on. To all the YIIK fans out there, I apologize. I will be giving the I.V update a shot when I get the chance, and who knows? Maybe I'll make a dedicated video about YIIK one day!

Matpat was extremely respectful about the discussion of the tragedy considering that other modern-day channels would call it “Nathan went to chuck e cheese’s with a pewpew in his pants and unalived four, almost five people”

In 2025 where we have people doing their make up while talking about how “an innocent woman was graped at pew pew point, resulting in her self deleting a week later”, MatPat absolutely talked about this tragedy with grace, tact, and respect that the “true crime community” wishes it could have

I never understood why people were so mad about MatPat making this theory. People use real life tragedies as inspiration for art all the time. I feel like it's just a symptom of people taking video-games as an art form less seriously compared to other forms like movies.

another thing to mention: a HUGE part of the original fnaf is the reoccuring theme of corporate negligence, or just negligence in general. kinda fits in to that idea of giving these kinds of things a purpose

I can't believe I got tricked into watching a really interesting video about internet exploitation of tragedies because game theory.

When I learned about Candace Newmaker, that name and story stayed with me to this day. I thought it was interesting how the game told stories about abuse towards children, specifically from broken homes into adoption. I respect the creators decision to stray from that inspiration, but I did appreciate the original idea to speak on such a hard topic with a story that could’ve been forgotten if not told through that game.

Kind of unrelated note, but I remember how creepy the atmosphere was in the first FNAF Game Theory video. I don't really get the same vibe from any of the other videos, kind of mirrors with FNAF itself. The first game has this dark vibe and unexplained terror to it, just like how this theory is probably the darkest FNAF theory Matpat has ever made.

I think it’s relevant to point out that Scott was allegedly on the brink of ending his life because of the negative reception of his dream and circumstances of his life at that time, his life insurance was canceled because of this. This wasn’t just an edgy piece this was functionally Scott Cawthon’s swan song, regardless of whether or not real life crimes were referenced in FNAF the game has an incredibly dark history based in real life trauma and tragedy. It’s a story of a very depressed man creating something good out of a dark place.

In conclusion, everyone owes MatPat an apology.

I've ALWAYS believed MatPat's first FNAF theory is perhaps the most accurate ever made. The parallels are VERY clear, and FNAF 1 was very much the last hurrah from a man who believed he had no future in game development, Scott clearly had zero plans for the narrative beyond what was in the first game, and was just making stuff up as he went along once the series blew up in popularity. It very much seems like Scott read about the incident in the news at some point and was either consciously or unconsciously inspired by it.

I would also argue that the True Crime community is very guilty of turning tragedy into entertainment. Not all of them but a lot of them don't treat their subject matter with the care it deserves. I know everyone loved her but Bailey Saran is my main example.

FNAF being inspired by a real life event isn't immoral at all. It isn't poking fun at, making fun of, or lightening the event. It is just loosely inspired, like so many things are. Matpat pointing out this potential inspiration is also not immoral in any way when you take into account his multiple disclaimers during the video that the event is serious and should be taken lightly. FNAF and Matpats theory were both done respectfully and unoffensively and the idea either should be shamed is silly in my opinion.
