In this HPWHC Speakers Series presentation, author Paul Horsted presents his fascinating photo book "Exploring with Custer." The book features side-by-side comparisons photos of Custer's 1874 Black Hills expedition with photos that Paul and co-author Ernest Grafe recreated more than 125 years later.

good talk, I have had this book for years and one on my goals since retiring is to read all them books " I'm gonna get to one of these days " soon as I picked it up I was glued to it talking notes for a new trip out near Custer. Many Thanks for taking the time to record this talk

The fires they saw the day at Inyan Kara Peek, were noted in Ludwell's report they saw off to the Southwest, were Souix and or Cheyenne Indians burning the grasses, thinking that the soldiers were coming after them. If you look at a present day Wyoming Highway map, the Northeast corner of the Thunder Basin National grasslands, almost points to where the the expedition was coming down toward Inyan Cara Peek. These fires burnt out the sagebrush, leaving the abundant grasslands. There has been since then funding to spay sagebrush in the area since to widen the area.
You will also find that on the return trip they traveled north to explore the lands between the Black Hills and the Missouri River. The scouts run into some Indians that worn the scouts that the Souix were upset and may becoming. As the expedition states crossing North Dakota northward, they run into more grass fires. it's at that they revise that the Souix were burning the grass to keep the soilders from having food for their horses. If you read were the fire are on the day bye day account, it matches up pretty much where the Theodore Roosevelt Grasslands are today. Again the fires burn off the sage and the grass come back fast.
I researched this back 1991, for a paper I coauthored, on formal names usage in Wyoming, in the Central Wyoming, Wyoming Geological Association.

They butchered and scalped old men women and children at Washita battle,relative's of the northern Cheyenne and Arapahos in sitting bull's camp at the little bighorn.Elders say he was a coward,because when the warrior's started gathering,he took women and children servivers as hostages to go hide in the walls (fort's) and left some of his men to be slaughtered.(Elliot)They weren't scared of the soldiers, elders would say once they started running out of ammo they took off back to the walls..in Oklahoma and Texas they had over 200 battle's, while other tribe's would say the same thing about the walls.
