Burt Sugar has looked 70 yrs old for 3 decades.

Love that Chuvalo guy.  Very sympathetic

Dont Judge Joe Louis on the videotape alone, because the video is shot at a slower frame rate than what we have used since the 1980s, thus making him appear far slower, far more plodding than he actually was. The difference is similar and comparable to wathing a film in standard definition vs watching a film in 4K.

You gotta be kidding me  , the quality of opponents Louis had compared to ALI WHAT A JOKE😂😂😂 billy conn wouldn't of lasted 4 rounds with Ali or larry holmes for that matter

Every era had their favorite. For my era it's Muhammad Ali and putting him 2nd is like sportwriters naming Jim Brown as #2 all-time behind Jerry Rice.

Bert's Magazine Fight Game was pretty good. I used to like it more than Ring magazine.

Gene Tunney beat Dempsey 2 out of 2 ....and like Marciano, was undefeated as a heavyweight. He has to be in any Top Ten near the top.

Tyson around 15th is accurate. Folded vs. the top Heavyweights outside of Spinks.

Rest in peace to the great Burt Sugar he knew boxing the sport is lacking minds like that 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾💯💯💯💯💯

Met Bert Sugar in the Bronx
Live in Kingston and never met Bian Kenney

Is this guy supposed to be a boxing expert or something? It's very typical to see that boxing experts have absolutely no idea what they're talking about. It's funny, but it's always the case. There is no such thing as a "boxing expert." A boxing expert is literally just another dude with an opinion.

This documentary must be years old.  There have been some heavyweight monsters since then, but size isn't always everything.  I always feel I'm being snowed when I hear Bert sound off, but then again, it's part of his cigar and fedora boxing persona.   I do applaud the high rating he gives to Dempsey, Ali, Louis.  They're still my favorites and the wide availability of youtubes should keep this game of Whose On First going for a while longer.

My Top Dozen, in no particular order :   Jim Jeffreys, Jack Johnson, Dempsey, Tunney, Louis, Marciano, Ali, Foreman, Tyson,  Lennox Lewis, Riddick Bowe, Larry Holmes.
I didn't include the Klitschkos or Fury because I am just unable to judge them, not because I thought they didn't deserve consideration.

Sugar is right here -- the criteria is NOT who would win #1 versus #2-- its in THEIR OWN ERA -- in the history of ALL boxing who was the very best ......

Burt Sugar is still the boxing historian I most want to listen to

Burt sugar is a great analyst but I’m a take the words from the guys who actually box the boxer and they say, Ali in his prime will beat Joe Louis

What sugar was forgetting. Yeah IF joe caught up to ali....but also, ali had one of the best chins in all of boxing.  If anybody could have taken what Joe had to give, it'd have been ali.

Ali, Foreman, Louis, Lewis, Holmes, Marciano, Johnson, Dempsey, Holyfield, Liston. Honorable mention: Tunney,Frazier,Klitschko

I actually like this list. Its somewhat close to mine. However Jack Johnson is not in my top ten and the fact he doesn't have Lennox Lewis on there really hurts his credibility.

Hes clearly just hating and hes ignoring the actual statistics and history.  Its also pretty dumb that he doesn't have ANY 90s heavyweights on there considering the 90s is the second greatest era in heavyweight history.

Hes also acting like a D bag here.
However i rate very highly guys like Louis , Tunney. Marciano and Charles. But i also cant see a top ten list without Sonny Liston on it.

One other thing about Louis. He didn't only just struggle with stick and move guys, he struggled with counter punchers (Schmeling, Charles, Walcott)  AND with good pressure fighters. (Gudouy, Galento, Marciano. ) he certainly wasn't unbeatable in his prime and i think Ali beats him by points in a somewhat wide margin.  Also a guy like Frazier, Tyson Dempsey,  or Marciano gives him trouble in his prime . Tyson and Frazier i think would stop him. Possibly Marciano too. With Dempsey hed probably be able to fight back enough to hurt him and win.

Dempsey i rate a little higher than most but he was VERY flawed. Ive recently rewatched all his filmed fights round for round and he gets outboxed and hit ALOT. More than Marciano.  Someone like Ali or Holmes i think easily beats him and if you give him another top tier pressure fighter hes gonna lose all his advantages and probably get knocked out. I think Marciano stops him prime for prime.
Most people don't realize that Dempsey went from journeyman to contender in one year with just basically 3 wins. He was also struggling with guys that wouldn't stand a chance against a modern heavyweight. Guys like Willie Mehan who he went 1-2-2 against a lost to him just a few months before he fought Willard for the title and then he never fought him again.  And although it was early in his career he went 1-1-1 against Jack Downey, a journeyman who finished his career with a record of 52-26 and who gave him his first loss.
He also struggled with Al Norton and went 1-0-2  against him. Norton finished his career at 11-11.
And of course Fireman Jim Flynn who he lost by ko in the first round but then knocked him out in the rematch.
It should be noted that those last 3 guys i mentioned, Dempsey knocked them alll out in the first round the last time they fought him.
He was struggling with guys like that then at somepoint in the later half of 1917 something clicked and he became a one round ko machine.
Back then there was a blurred line between exhibition matches and professional fights. Dempsey fought dozens of exhibitions through his career and knocked out most of his opponents in the first round. Those exhibitions gave him the trials and experience he needed to hone his craft as a knockout master. Its kind of unique thing and it was almost like having an amature career in the middle of a pro career.
By 1918 he was a killer and knocked out several top ten guys like Jim Flynn who i mentioned,  Bill Breenan who gave him trouble in a slugfest but he knocked out. Ed Gunboat Smith. Billy Miske, Carl Morris. Battling Levinsky , and finally Fred Fulton who he destroyed in 17 seconds. It was really the Fulton fight that got him the title shot because Fulton was the number one contender for a while, knocking guys out and was actually signed to fight Willard for the title at one point but for reasons i cant remember the fight never happened.  So after Dempsey crushed him so easily the title shot had to go to him .
Before he beat Willard he went on a national exhibitions tour similar to what John L Sullivan did back in the 1880s and have 7 exhibition fights and knocked out all 7 fighters in the first round. Dempsey had 25 official recored first round kos in pro fights BUT if all his exhibition fights were added hed have over 60 first round kos. Exhibition or not that is insane.  Its too bad he didn't keep track of these himself because its impossible to track all the records of them down. Plus he had dozens of street fights and bareknuckle fights for money so his toughness is unparalleled in the history of boxing.
BUT like i said he got hit alot and struggled with many many guys. He did have good headmovement for defense and was quick on his feet for a slugger but he often froze in front of his opponents during offensive spurts. You can see this in almost all his recored fights.
Ali , Holmes. Walcott, Page, Fury, Byrd, guys like that fast on their feet would easily outpoint him. Good hard counter punchers like Holyfield, Charles, even Schmeling.  Yes Max Schmeling,  i think would stop him. A powerful pressure fighter with similar yet superior skills to him like Marciano. Frazier, Tyson, Tua ,Morrison,  would Destroy him in back and fourth slugfests that hed lose in early to mid rounds. Big powerful boxer punchers like Foreman,  Liston, Cooney, Lewis, would knock him out in one of 2 rounds with very little trouble.
Im honestly not sure if he cracks my top ten. If he does its number 10 exactly.
