The punishment dished out in that heavyweight fight between Ernie Shavers and Tex Cobb was just unbelievable, that either man was left standing is one of the greatest mysteries in boxing. One of the best heavyweight fights of all time. Two Bruisers, they don’t fight like this anymore.
My wife's family (Ellis) were close friends with the Cobb family when Randall was a kid in Bridge City/Orange. My father-in-law and Randall's dad worked together at Dupont in Orange. After his dad passed away his mom moved them out to Abilene. Randall and one of this brother's came back to Orange for a visit with the Ellis family after my wife and I were married. This was in the late 70s or early 80s. At the time I think he was training with Jimmy Young. My wife and her dad and Mom were at the fight in San Antonio against Ken Norton. They had 2nd row seats.
During that afternoon visit I have never laughed so hard in my life just listening to him describe his life and telling stories. He was a natural. Wish we could meet up again.
I met him so very briefly in 2000 when I delivered room service to him at the hotel I worked at. He flashed a warm smile and thanked me with a nice tip.
I remember my old man telling me about Tex Cobb before he was an actor and he had fought some of the biggest heavyweights… I had no idea he beat Ernie Shavers. That’s insane
That's a tough Texan, and a strong, solid dude. Tex, you have a toughness that few people have. Regardless of wins, you are a champion. I wish more of us could be like you .
