Thinking about moving to Germany? These are seven things I genuinely wish I'd known before living here.
From understanding Kaltmiete and Warmmiete — and discovering that your apartment might not even include a fitted kitchen — to dealing with German documents, private health insurance, Sunday shopping, transport, car sharing and even knowing whose name is actually on your internet contract.
These aren't generic tips I found online. They're situations I've personally encountered while living in Germany, along with the solutions that worked for me.
If you already live in Germany, what's one thing you wish somebody had told you before you arrived?

For me, some of the biggest surprises were discovering that a rented apartment might not even come with a fitted kitchen, learning how my private health insurance actually works when a large bill arrives, and finding out that “internet included” doesn’t necessarily mean you can speak to the internet provider. 😄
These are obviously my own experiences, so I’d love to build a list from people who actually live here.
What caught you completely by surprise when you first arrived in Germany?
And if you’re planning to move here, what’s the ONE thing you’re still trying to figure out?
