Getting namedropped in a Summoning Salt video title is an honour only previously given to Matt Turk. Congratulations, abney317!

that beginning with abney's sarcasm about the guys discovery due so seeing so many beforehand slowly changing into absolute shock is absolutely priceless

@justamir5 3 years ago

A shortcut being discovered in the 90s and not being globally known until 2020 is insane

If watching in 2025 and looking for an update: Kazuya held onto the record until July 27th, 2023 when Abney took it back. Abney continues to hold the title to this day, currently with a time of 22:41 set on December 10th, 2024.

Forest64 is a badass

- discovers new gamebreaking shortcut
- sends to abney even tho he never participated in his streams
- leaves without elaborating further

I love how Garret was sitting on that Rainbow Road skip for decades because he thought the community knew already.

The opening sequence showing Abney's reaction to the new shortcut really set the tone for what was to come. Great video as always.

@Cade3391 10 months ago

For all watching this now: abney has the record at 22:41, followed by kazuya at 23:05.

I've never been so excited to watch a blue dot compete against a red dot in a game I barely play.

Abney is probably the most patient speedrunner out there. Always takes disappointment extremely well. That's why he's my favorite.

@andrewwolverton3762 3 years ago (edited)

The look on his face going from sarcasm and pessimism to shock and wonder when he saw the viewers video was the best.

@Skeletalcatto 3 years ago

Salts you got me so stressed and sympathetic for Abney. I didn't even know he existed till 35 minutes ago

@mario199923 3 years ago

My favorite thing about Salt's videos is he hooks you with what seems like a finale statement, but then you look and there's 30+ minutes of the video left

@sebastianahrens2385 3 years ago (edited)

Funny how Abney was part of the Alliance to challenge Mathias, only to find himself in a similar position a few years later :D
Edit: Also, why am I concerned about Abney's ability to keep going in spite of setbacks when I know he's a guy willing to throw 26700 attempts at a single track?

@StrandedKnight84 3 years ago

Abney is the GOAT, but what really stood out to me in this story is the determination of Kazuya. Here is a guy who didn't have nearly the skillset to challenge Abney initially, but decided to power through even if would take 50k attempts of a 20+ minute run. A true demonstration of perseverance.

@vstriker4105 3 years ago

It’s incredible how quickly this record is changing, just a month after this video releases, Abney gets a 22:58!

@onlysmiles4949 3 years ago (edited)

The fact that the Rainbow Road shortcut went undiscovered for over 2 decades because the guy who found it just assumed it was already known is nothing short of incredible

Makes me wonder just how many other speedrunning discoveries are hidden in the same way

That last quote: "So instead of saying something silly, like I think it will be over very soon and it's been a crazy ride, I'm going to say that this game will never be over and the ride will only get crazier, and I am just participating in one small part of the middle of the ride and there are many talented people who helped build the ride before me and there'll be many talented people who help finish off the ride after me." - darbian 2016

Imagine how alive it must make you feel to have someone take your record after 7 years, knowing that you can take it back if you work hard enough. To get to be the hunter instead of the hunted. It must feel like getting to discover speed-running all over again.
