VICTIMS OF THE 2024 PUNCAK JAYA REGIONAL ELECTION CONFLICT

On November 27, 2024, on election day, clashes broke out between supporters of candidate pairs near the Puncak Jaya General Elections Commission (KPU) office. The mob used bows and arrows, and 40 houses and one honai (traditional house) were burned.

In the incident, 94 people suffered arrow injuries, and 14 victims were scheduled to be transferred to Jayapura Regional Hospital. ANTARA reported that 10 seriously injured victims were evacuated to Jayapura, while those with minor injuries were treated in Mulia.

The conflict continued into early 2025. On February 5–6, 2025, there were reports of one death and approximately 110–120 injuries. However, case documents filed with the Constitutional Court recorded three deaths, 11 serious injuries, and 83 minor injuries, for a total of 93 victims.

Overall, the Carstensz Peace Task Force recorded 12 deaths and 658 injuries from November 27, 2024, to April 4, 2025.

The conflict also impacted the regional election process. The Constitutional Court ordered a recount in 22 districts, while results from four districts—Mulia, Lumo, Tingginambut, and Gurage—were not included in the recount due to security concerns and logistical issues.

Note: The number of casualties for each incident varies between sources due to differences in the timing and scope of data collection. The figures of 12 deaths and 658 injuries reflect the overall recapitulation of the conflict through April 4, 2025, not just the casualties on Election Day.
