everybody wanna make a framework, but nobody wanna work on the frame 🗣️

sonic fans finally understand game design is hard

I like the momentum playstyle but i just wish the game had stages actually designed for it that demand me to use the physics more strategically

The thing people often fail to account for when it comes to Tails and Knuckles is that the fly and glide abilities were only balanced in 2D because of the nature of the levels. They built a lot around height and creating vertical roadblocks that you couldn’t just dodge around because they were impassable without touching them. That allowed for the designers to make sure you were actually interacting with the level design instead of gliding over everything, outside of a couple of levels like Emerald Hill where the abilities weren’t even designed to be used.

In 3D, Sonic Team realized as early as Adventure 1 that they couldn’t do the same thing anymore without making levels incredibly restrictive, so they made the choice to spec these overpowered abilities into stage types that made sense for them. Tails got level reruns that were explicitly designed around using his overpowered flight to skip huge sections of the stage in races against Sonic, turning a potential pitfall into a feature. Knuckles on the other hand had his gliding and climbing worked into stages focused around exploration, so instead of just soaring over everything to the goal, players were intended to explore every last part of it, again turning it from an oversight into a feature.

Say what you will about how Sonic Team designs levels, but they’re not unintelligent in the large scale decision-making about things like gameplay design.

There ARE ranks, you can only see them in the hub world though above the stage ring

Sees Knuckles in the thumbnail and "it's rough"
ROUGHER THAN THE REST OF THEM

I wish I could bounce button over all my problems irl

13:20 "Random example." He says, thinking about an exact scenario that I have also experienced in my runs.

If I'm gonna be honest, probably the highest compliment I can give this framework is that I want to learn Unity in order to make a level for this project.
I would die to make that happen.

You know who else needs work? MY MOM!!1!1!1!1!1

Stelmo when you tell him to play a sonic game that isn't P-06

Stelmo was very insistent that this isn't a preview build, it's a full release of the project. By the sounds of it we won't get the amount of content we just got in a single update from this point onward, and they're taking a break, waiting for a huge amount of bugs and feedback to pile up, then crushing it all with an update.

I think that P-06 stage was made as a more exploratory thing and not really meant as a usual stage so I think its fine if that one isn't all that here.
But from what im getting youre saying is they just gotta add stages around the moveset itself, ones that flow well in this design yea?

I won't judge quite yet since i haven't actually played it myself but I think this has a lot of promise from what im seeing.

16:56 There is, you can check it next to the warp rings in the hub

I personally like how powerful the characters are in the stages. Because now that you have all that power, what can you do with it?
The crazy skips and amount of things you can do in the levels if you're good enough keeps it really intriguing to play.

Game so hyped up that I thought it was an actual game

project hero is basically roblox sonic frameworks (the framework devs using levels from other games adding minor things) but who cares! I always wanted project hero to have levels :D i really loved that they had elemental shields and stuff

2:06, making games is already hard, making a game for a character as fast as Sonic needs to be is another thing.

To me, the stages feel like they were chosen for speedrunning first, balanced experience second.

the thing is the whole point of this game is all about speedrunning the stage, trying to get the fastest time possible by replaying the stage over and over by pulling out all the stops, feeling what sonic would've feel if the games gave the player complete control over sonic's freedom by taking off the limit of mobility the game could ever offer. This is the exact reason why I love games like Sonic World DX and Sonic Frontiers, but not a lot of people seem to realize the potential in that aspect and not a lot of people know the game is built to be played like that

This is the sonic feel I've been looking for🥺
