I think the lover was art, Ive watched it many times, the narration takes it to an another level.

The Lover - Jane March 'The Sinner from Pinner' and I think she was also in a rather risque film with Bruce Willis as a therapist and his patient Jane March: 'The Color of Night'

I've only seen Singapore Sling. I now get an unsettling feeling when I hear it's raining 🤢

The Lover was a pretty good movie.  Portraying something that wasnt controversial at the time shouldnt be censored, if youre telling a story about the past- it should be as accurate as possible.

"Pretty Baby" should be on this list..

The Lover was actually a good film saw this on video years afterwards.

I've seen The Lover and it's a really well put together movie. It's really beautifully shot and the sets, costumes, etc are very good. People fixate on the sex and I get that but the actress was 19 at the time. What people don't seem to have an issue with is the casual racism from every white character. Even the authors own narrative (assuming it's from the book) is racist. That's the bigger problem for me.

Surprisingly, Thundercrack is heavily referenced in the TV show Friends. Names of characters, storylines, running jokes. Apparently, the creators, David Crane and Marta Kauffman, are big fans.

"The Tin Drum" - despite winning an Academy Award for best foreign film in 1980 - ruffled quite a few feathers with its controversial depictions of underage sexuality. It was banned or censored in several locales at one time or another.

I always thought The Image was simply designed for an adult fetish audience.  It was done in the same year as The Story of O.  Therefore, it was simply an example of something which is extremely rare, adult films with a story and good production.  It's not suitable for a mainstream audience, but it is a classic within its genre.

The one I remember being especially notorious was "White Dog" (1982), starring Kristy McNichol, about a dog trained by neo-Nazis to attack black people, and then a woman rescues the dog and they have to "de-program" it. Doesn't seem that outrageous in retrospect, but I remember it was basically buried and never released. The sports podcaster Bill Simmons is a huge fan of Taboo. He mentions it all the time. I think he was a teenager when it came out and it's burned into his brain forever. The Lover is well-made, but wow that actress looks young. That was probably the issue. My understanding is that she was 17 when filming began, and turned 18 during production.

Perversion, much of this.  The Lover,I seen to remember, was beautiful.

British film buffs who are interested in this kind of video probably already know this, but just in case anyone doesn't know, the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) is actually a company that formed as local councils had the legal responsibility for classifying films but many councils didn't have the staff / experience. So your local council can certify a film, eg for a local film festival, or how a handful of councils banned Monty Python Life of Brian. When "video nasties" hit the headlines the Government of the day gave the BBFC the legal authority to classify films on tape (as they were in the day).

Might as well keep it in the family 😮

Fascinating list

Radley Metzger's movies are fantastic.

Another beautifully presented video. Looking forward to finding a few of these.

I'm kind of surprised The Night Porter wasn't on this list. Have you featured it before or is it too well known or obvious a choice?

I'm pretty sure Caged Heat was on Cinemax back in the 80s.

Lifeforce 1985 "She spent most of the movie with no clothes on". She was in the movie less than 5 minutes.
