People tend to hold John Cena vs CM Punk in high regards, but people forget that Jeff Hardy vs CM Punk made CM Punk a WWE main eventer.

I love how slowly they build to Punk being a complete straight-edge prick. It's subtle at first, with Punk making a snide remark at Hardy living a "different lifestyle." Gives the story so much momentum week over week as things escalate

Possibly the most PTSD inducing feud for fans who grew up during these years

They should’ve fought at wrestlemania 26

Jeff was his own worst enemy. He had the potential to be the biggest star of his generation. He was never a great talker but he had so much charisma without even talking.

Punk's character in this feud had a lot more nuance than I was ever used to from WWE, especially as a kid. While he obviously was the heel, he was a complex heel. And while watching as a kid, I was used to everyone being clearcut good vs bad guys. Punk kind of changed that for me because his reasoning for cashing in made sense, who wouldn’t take that opportunity? And he just slowly becomes more and more evil.

their chemistry was amazingly great. Punk was basically a heel for telling ppl not to do drugs.. I remember every kid at school hated Punk (including me) when Jeff left. Old memorys

Finally a WWE rivalry and what a great rivalry.

Literal modern day Shawn vs Bret

One detail I’ve always loved about Punk’s work, he doesn’t stop talking when someone’s music hits to interrupt him. He, at the least, finishes his sentence. It’s subtle but it does a lot for his character.

Only 20 minutes in but holy shit the contrast between how good Punk is on the mic and Jeff’s generic ass responses is hilarious.

He’s so insanely over so he can say whatever he wants but the difference in quality is insane

Still one of the most effective MITB cash-ins and heel turns of all time. I remember being unreasonably mad when I watched Punk pin Jeff lmao.

The Charismatic Enigma vs The Straight Edge Savior. Two gimmicks that were portrayed greatly on both of these mean, still a great rivalry btw

Hardy will go down as one of the biggest what ifs in WWE history. Dude was more over than anybody on the roster in 2008/09. He could have won so many more world titles and main evented WM.

It’s crazy how CM Punk verbally breaks down Jeff every week. It makes me wonder if this feud is part of the reason everything happened after. I can’t imagine standing in the ring every week and have someone come at my personal issues so hard

Being an adult is realizing Punk was the good guy. He's that friend you don't like but can always count on to tell you the truth.

Looking back, this might be the best example of “the heel was in the right”.
