So im not the only one obsessed with mountain climbing disasters. Dont know how i ended up here but here i am!

George Mallory, when asked why he wanted to climb Everest, replied "Because it is there." I believe that if mountains could talk, their reply if asked why climbers die would be similar: "Because they were there."

FYI, the picture of shriya shar in the yellow suit was a photoshopped picture used to raise awareness and funds for her climb. She was wearing a red suit when she died. Not yellow

None of these deaths were tragic. Tragic is a child dying of starvation or disease, tragic is a mother dying during child birth, tragic is being drafted to fight an unnecessary war and dying in action. Rich people taking unnecessary risks for an unnecessary activity and dying in the process isn’t tragic.

Helping others in need down a mountain vs dragging an incoherent 100+ lb person from the death zone a down mountain that can offer no absolutely assistance is suicide

If you don't come down from the mountain, you have not climbed the mountain successfully

I still don’t understand how David Sharpe’s death was so controversial, considering the fact that many people have begged others for help during the descent and because it’s so dangerous had to be left there. While David waved people away.

For the money they spent, they could've built homemade submersibles and died underwater instead.

Working for a living, caring for your family is enough to be proud of.

i saw a video of a sherpa carrying a person of the mountain what an absolute ledgend it took him 6 hours to carry him down the mountain

it seems a lot of these climbers need a psychological evaluation prior to allowing them near the mountain

When the first mountain you climb is Mt Everest and you think running , even with a pack, for a number of months and getting a packing list from your tour company filled is the way to go you are sadly delusional. Mountains don’t care how much you want something or how much money you throw at it. Even climbers who condition for years and climb other mountains in preparation can struggle and succumb to the conditions and weather changes on Mt Everest. So many of these stories show carelessness and lack of respect for not just the mountain, but for the other climbers, their families and even themselves. I wish their deaths wouldn’t be glamorized as mythic attempts of cosmic fulfillment.

I would absolutely love to climb Everest. But there is absolutely no way id be fit enough (or stupid enough) to risk death just to say i had done it.

I feel for the Sherpas who have had to watch so many people die. Poor people having to have that trauma to support themselves and their families.

In that altitude, all you can do to help others is encourage them to move and oxygen if you have extra. Every climber needs to understand that when you’re at the top you’re on your own. There’s an unwritten rule that needs to be adhered is if by 2 pm you haven’t reached the peak you must turn around and go back. David Sharp died due to hubris. He was woefully unprepared in all aspects. He was given help and he refused.

They have covered this story about Sharp since 2006. According to your account help was offered and he refused.  It's pretty hard to save a drowning person when they try to drown you in the process. To criticize those who tried to help a man who refused help is , for lack of a better word, stupid.

My 39 year old son ,Shrinivas Sainis Dattatraya , a singaporean of Indian descent , has been reported missing since 19 th May 2023 while descending after summiting mount Everest  successfully. He still remains missing as of today.Hoping for a miracle to happen to get him back alive.

I have enough problems camping at State parks in the summer. Can't imagine camping and climbing for days in freezing cold Temps with little oxygen!

People that die, while doing some thing they know is dangerous, KNOWING there is a high probability of death involved—-isn’t “tragic.”

Is it possible Sharp denied help knowing he was doomed and would only risk others lives if he allowed them to help him? Seems to me Sharp did the noble thing in such a situation
