Kingdom Hearts 1 still stands as the MOST Unique title throughout the series history due to the way Square approached its level design, interactions & little details. This is something that has been largely forgotten about since KH2 & should be a priority for worlds in the upcoming Kingdom Hearts 4!

And this is why KH1 is still my favorite in the series.

S tier video dude. Kingdom hearts needs world interactivity & mystique again. More games honesty needs this. The Spider-Man games do more than ever.

Wonderland in kh1 really impressed me because the amount of secrets they crammed into just 4 rooms utilizing every corners and all 4 sides of the bizzare room

Scala Ad Caelum is the closest we got to the kh1 design, it didn't only use puzzles to complete the story but it also included lore behind it

Let’s not forget how magic had interactivity in kh1 boss battles too. Turning off the stove and putting out the trickmaster’s weapons with blizzard, Captain Hook responding to fire and thunder, maleficent being pulled down by gravity, Riku using dark firaga if you hit him with fire, tech points for hitting elemental weaknesses, etc. There’s not really anything like that after kh1 besides water putting out fire cores in kh3.

This right here, along with the narrative direction making everything feel important, is why KH1 is still the best game in the series in my book

The closest world we’ve gotten to a KH1 world since KH1 is the Toy Story world in KH3. It’s why it’s my favorite world in KH3, and people don’t talk about this fact nearly enough.

Even if though soras movement is way more expansive they could play with the absolute limits of his movement abilities to create challenging platforming sections

Birth by Sleep tried its best, I’d argue. There were the mouse hole areas in Cinderella’s House, the time trials and cauldron springs in the Evil Queen’s Castle, Maleficent’s Easy Invisible Maze With Only One Forking Path, Disney Town Underground, and all those advanced commands tucked away in areas that required High Jump and Air Slide (or you could cheese it early with a bunch of Sliding Dashes). There were the elevators and cells in the Deep Space prison block, and Skull Rock’s upper floor and the waterfall climb in Neverland.

Also the Ice Cream enemies.

This is why this is the only entry in the series I'm having fun replaying in a randomizer: So many things in the various worlds are locked behind certain movement abilities, spells, trinities, or a combination of them, that it feels just as satisfying to find High Jump here than Hookshot in Ocarina of Time rando. Not to mention how the new improved archipelago randomizer can shuffle so many new things that weren't possible before. I can't imagine having that much fun randomizing KH2, despite that one having much more attention and support.

couldn't have said it better myself!

Man you're so right and KH1 had so much stuff that you even forgot to mention the Trinity moves. I also hope Cid comes back to sell you parts for the Gummi Ship.

That transition @4:39 was insane

Just beat kh1 yesterday for the first time in at least 10+ years. It holds up so damn well

I honestly love San Fransokyo for the vertical exploration. Usually I'd hate boring large landscapes, but KH3's airstep makes traveling around super easy. If you know where all the treasures/lucky emblems are, you shouldn't spend too much time in this world. It also helps it's one of the shorter worlds so finishing its story doesn't drag.

A bit unrelated. But I really do miss the HP for Donald and Goofy from KH1. I loved seeing their HP and MP increase as they leveled up. The HP from every other game is always the same which is a huge shame. I know you get more space for a map and the HP of other enemies but still its missed.

I've been around in the fandom long enough to remember when KH2 was criticized of being a hallway simulator that was press x to win. I think when the final mix finally released that's when it became the golden child. For good reason, but still.

As someone that played KH1 for the first time last year after playing most of the other entries the exploration was amazing. I enjoyed the secrets and puzzles that you’d discover as well as out of battle use of magic. So technical it was a great game
