Wonders of Life might be one of the strangest lands Disney has ever built.

Opened at EPCOT in 1989, this massive health-themed pavilion was packed with attractions about the human body, including the notoriously nauseating Body Wars, the bizarrely charming Cranium Command, sensory illusions, exercise machines, health exhibits, and even a Martin Short film about human reproduction. The whole place was wrapped in colorful late-80s design that eventually took on a strangely liminal atmosphere as the pavilion faded away.

In this video, we’re diving into the full history of Wonders of Life, including Disney’s original plans for an ambitious dark ride through the human body, the pavilion’s unusual attractions, Body Wars and its eerie queue, the abandoned MetLife lounge, the mysterious disappearance of the Buzzy animatronic, and the abandoned plans for the Play Pavilion.

It’s a fascinating piece of EPCOT history that feels almost impossible to imagine Disney building today.

They used to do market research focus groups in this building. You'd walk through the big atrium, watch a show, then take a survey in a circus themed room while eating snacks. I did mine in 2017

So basically Pirates of the Pancreas could have been real??

@Rite1010. 2 weeks ago

They could make this whole area Inside Out themed and run with it

Man I miss the crazy of Michael Eisner era Disney.

This place was pretty much Disney's version of the backrooms. It's a shame that closest attempt at repurposing it failed all because of the pandemic. I hope that the building can find a new life at some point, but it more than likely will just get torn down instead unfortunately.

The sex education short is exactly like every ""age appropriate"" book about conception that I could find in every school library I ever snuck into the "mature" section in as a child to answer the burning question: literally how on earth does the sperm get into the woman's body. it drove me crazy that every single educational book or program or whatever just dodged that part of the story to avoid controversy but I genuinely honestly think that if someone had just told me how it happened instead of leaving out this very obviously important piece of information I would have been a lot less obsessed with learning about it as a kid, it pissed me off then and it still pisses me off now, its as basic a fact as "babies drink milk from their mothers boobs" and people act like a 7 year old is gonna literally explode if they somehow find out, its so dumb

Some of the one liner jabs are great 😂”luckily actual scientists are running this program, instead of jackass billionaires” 25:59

6:03 It’s really sad that they were uninterested. We had a tiny kids’ museum near us for many years that featured a “brain” video and a sculpture of a heart that kids could play inside. My kids watched that brain video so many times I could recite the entire thing by memory. We went to amusement and theme parks and museums all over, and they still loved this little local place.

When you mentioned the 36-foot heart prop, I just pictured an Imagineer going to the Franklin Institute in Philly, seeing the walk-in heart they have, and deciding that Disney absolutely needed their own for Epcot.

I'm here because of the thumbnail like I watch your videos so many times I watch sometimes like a marathon

I loved Body Wars. I didn't get to go on it all the time because my grandparents hated it so much. It was a rough brutal simulator, and I loved it.

I visited Wonders of Life once in 1991, I was 8yo. It made such an impact I still remember riding Body Wars and watching Craneum Command and Making of Me. I know the park has changed a lot so I’m glad my parents took me there during the classic era of Epcot.

As a huge EPCOT nerd, part of me wishes I could've seen the Wonders of Life Pavilion, but the part of me that get nauseous with anything to do with the human body is glad I never got to. Definitely glad the Incredible Journey Within wasn't made, that would've been my nightmare.
