Ah, Danganronpa 3. We're back at it again, this time with Despair Arc!
It's as wacky as they come.
90% of scenes are interrupted and come out of left field, yet—and don't even ask me how—the writers stitched together this insanely gruesome, hopeless narrative.
One that sheds light on our captivatingly colorful cast prior to the carnage... and prior to some... interesting writing choices.
It's my longest video yet (somehow?) and in slight-seriousness, I'm reeeally proud of this one.

Chapter 1: The Nightmare Awakened
This is the setting/premise chapter. Expect broader, more subtextual analysis that's easier to grasp.
I intended this one to be the perfect opener to ease into the more in-depth bits later on.
Chapter 2: Past Lives Sighted, Soon Reunited
This is the character analysis chapter!
Running through each cast member in a linear structure, exploring them with a mix of personal opinions and analysis woven together through examples and "pseudo-"psychological backing lol.
Chapter 3: The Kingdom of Hope, Ravaged by Despair
This is the narrative/structural analysis chapter! A lot of points from Chapter 2 are expanded and contextualized into their own theses.
So many sharp contrasts and big, overarching themes, all locked down with some seriously intense analysis—not even I know how I wrote that shiiii... stuff. We get deep here!!
Chapter 4: The Biggest, Most Awful, Most Tragic Event in Human History
A single-scene analysis, covering one of the most pivotal moments in the series. A lot of random artistic notes alongside some pretty dark themes.
I use this chapter as an emotional mood board, throwing things at the wall to see if they stick (and maybe even getting the tears flowing if I'm lucky).
"Hope" this "Despair"fully crafted structure is beneficial! Enjoy!

Admittedly, I've used it in the past to tighten the finalised script, but after the Danganronpa 2 video (and a hefty bit of education), I've stumbled upon a new workflow, and have been enjoying it ever since!
That's why the gap between videos has been moooonths!
Learning to appreciate my writing as-is instead of wasting hours of drafting by funnelling it into a prediction machine.
Regardless, I'm so proud to say the ideas, writing, delivery, editing, the whole SHEBANG is made by humans!!

Throughout despair arc she:
Blows up the car she just left in front of dozens of witnesses.
Makes Mukuro throw a grenade out of another car where they are both in.
Orchestrates a massacre, which she makes public herself.
Attacks the academy with a literal army.
Among other things.
All of this shit is public, yet there is never ever any law enforcement present. She commits obvious crimes the entire time without covering anything up and the only reason she isn't caught is that the writers just ignore the possibility of the police investigation. It's never mention, everyone just acts as if law enforcement isn't a thing and the plot does too.
It's even worse due to the fact that in DR0, her plan to make the reserve course riot through the First Mutual Killing is actually carried out in secret, but the anime goes out of its way to retcon it to Junko sending all the information to media to make it public, yet her plan still relies on the steering committee trying to cover it up (wtf????).
The killing is also now shown to the reserve course through them finding out after it's made public, instead of them being forced to see it in some secret building, but nobody thought about calling the police, instead everyone decides to riot.
The anime still tries to frame this as some really impressive mastermind move, when it literally fails at the basics for every criminal, which is trying to cover up your tracks or evade capture in any shape or form. Junko's plan would have failed the second a single policeman was present.
For real they had potential for SOMETHING. I know it’s Danganronpa but STILL
I think Genocide Jack needed more screentime.

In the most biased way possible, we NEEDED more Gundham!!!
While Despair Arc isn't exactly my favourite piece of Danganronpa media, wow, was it my favourite to write for so far.
I guess seeing my analysis become more in-depth over time (as reflected in the absurd runtime lol) and trying out different approaches has made it stand out so much.
And, better yet, it's only gonna get better from here!... right?
