The Rest Is Football

Will Gianni Infantino still be FIFA President after the next elections in March? How much damage has this actually done to him? Do FIFA need the extra money?

Gary is joined by Martyn Ziegler, the man who broke the news about Infantino’s plans to sell stakes in the World Cup, to discuss how he found out about the story and whether there is too much power in the hands of one man.

Really interesting chat. Infuriating to hear how corrupt these people are. Shameless. But also inspiring to see people exposing it and fighting it.

Important and insightful conversation. Please continue to host these conversations about the football corruption issues

It can't be dealt with in isolation. The entire economic system is rotten to the core. Dishonesty and corruption are the norm.

I so wish more people would do this type of reporting on lots of things but it is a truly global story that was so well written and well thought out by the people involved. I’m glad you got a chance to chat about it in depth

It’s pure greed, it’s that simple.
Politicians have the same problem.

They can start by getting rid of him. Then learning can truly begin.

I hope infantino gets what he deserves and the organisation gets reconfigured with genuine people who love the game.

the downside of a federation-based rotation system as head of FIFA, is that they would use the 4 years to maximise the extraction of funds for their federation. Rotation is a good idea, but need a more robust, transparent system for governance that is not based on individual power

The World Cup will always get bigger as long as the integrity off the sport is not compromised.

As Lord Acton said: Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

If by “ex-football players” you mean people who had a significant professional/international playing career, I count 2 of the 37:

1. Dejan Savićević — Montenegro
Former professional footballer, Yugoslavia/Montenegro international, and one of the most prominent players of his generation. He played for Red Star Belgrade and AC Milan and won the European Cup with Milan in 1991–92. He is currently a FIFA Council member.
2. Cindy Parlow Cone — United States
Former professional/international women’s footballer. She played for the United States women’s national team, won Olympic gold in 1996 and 2004, and later became president of U.S. Soccer. She is currently on the FIFA Council.

So the proportion is

2 / 37 = 5.4%

In other words, about 95% of the FIFA Council are not former football players.

“If a person or an institution are held sacred by too many people, then they are by definition beyond criticism. And when a person or an institution becomes beyond criticism, it seems they slip inevitably towards corruption.”

I knew it would be a problem with that one after the Vancouver police had to point out that he was not a head of state and wouldn’t be getting any police escorts for the World Cup because if harry and his wife were not even given that level of protection and he is the current king’s son how also the head of the commonwealth
