Is death the end, or a new beginning?
Buddhism teaches that for 49 days after a person leaves this world, the soul progresses along a new path through seven stages.
① The stage of realizing death
② Attachment to the world
③ Reflection on life and judgment
④ Experiencing the weight of karma
⑤ The crossroads of fear and liberation
⑥ Encountering new connections
⑦ Rebirth, the threshold of reincarnation
This 49-day journey is not merely a story about what happens after death.
It is a teaching that shows us how we should live right now.
The Buddha said:
“The mind creates karma, and karma creates the path.”
The thoughts and actions we perform today shape tomorrow’s life and the path after death.

🕯 What is the Buddhist 49-Day Memorial Service (Chilchiljae)?
Buddhism teaches that after a person leaves this world, they remain in the intermediate state (Chung-eum) for 49 days. Since the path of a new life is determined by the karma of the deceased during this period,
the bereaved family offers Buddhist prayers every seven days to wish for the deceased to move forward on a good path.
This is called Chilchiljae (Seven-Seven Memorial Service), a funeral ritual deeply rooted in the Buddhist traditions of Korea and China.
The 49th-day memorial service is not merely a funeral custom; it can be described as a time of wisdom where the living honor the deceased and reflect on life and death. 🙏
