Last year, a self proclaimed Estranged Parent took to the internet to share that she'd been estranged. Rather than taking any accountability, we saw her use a classic cult tactic called blame shifting, as well as manipulate the audience using other classic cult leader tactics. This made me wonder: are dysfunctional families like cults? Today we explore just that and react to this strange, yet well produced video about estrangement.

It's crazy how she can say "I was waiting for the whole email thing to blow over" and then "I was watching videos online about estrangement because I had no idea why this was happening 😢". Like, did you read the email, ma'am? And do you realize your immediate dismissal of what your daughter wrote to you is a*hole behavior?

She says that they loved her without strings, but she’s constantly making snide remarks about how much they “invested” in her. There’s your strings. That’s a bizarre mindset to be in, where you think that subtly guilting your child over what it cost to raise them would make you look better

She's says the email is 90% politics, yet the animated quotes from the email had nothing to do with politics!

I have zero sympathy for that woman. As you said, kids try EVERYTHING to make things better, to be heard, to be respected. They give a million chances to their parents before leaving. This woman shit on every single one of those and she doesn't get to grieve as if her daughter hadn't worked her ass off fot this relationship and poured an amount of emotional energy into it that she can't even imagine. She has no right to grieve as if she lost something. She threw something away that her daughter made from her own heart's blood. She doesn't get to grieve.

It’s worse than you think with Diane the estranged mother. She has triple content striked at least one creator called societal narcissism, with letters from her attorneys threatening him too. He’s been making content for adult children of npd parents for like 10 years. He might be suspended rn and fighting it, or he might be on a break, idk. But she was content striking him about 6 weeks ago and he hasn’t been posting. Diane supposedly is backed with a production company. I mean her videos are insane. What she’s doing to creators that go against her is terrible. She’s a literal monster. I feel bad for her daughter experiencing her wrath. 😢

YEp. My mother was Queen Narcissist. MY mom used my ADHD against me too! My mom stopped buying my winter jackets for school because my 6 year old self had ADHD. She favored my brother my entire life, and, once my dad died, she completely wrote me out of her will and gave it all to my brother. The most toxic relationship; straight outta the womb. I was terrified of her until her dying day. Luckily that day came, and I feel free for the first time. Freedom from toxicity.

The statement of "I sent I love you's because that's what mom's are supposed to do, right?" instead of "because I love her and I wanted her to know" tells me EVERYTHING. She didn't even say sorry. If she had just said I am sorry, let me know what we can do to fix this and not even already acknowledging and looking within would have been the start I would need tbh.

My mom called me after 9 years, to tell me my father was dying from cancer. She said to me "Whatever this is, let's just move on." and she wanted to end it there. I refused and was told I was a horrible person. These people know what they did but they try to invalidate your feelings, because they are the one's who benefitted from hurting you and keeping you down. My mother loved to trash me to other family members, when I communicated that I was in a great depression from being attacked while I was in the military. She actually told me it was my fault. When I finally had an Aunt call her out, guess what? She cancelled that Aunt out of the family.

What hurt me was the disdain in that mom’s voice, especially when she was talking about her daughter cosplaying and her TikTok account. It’s pretty obvious what she really thinks of her daughter.

“And at some point you want to stop being the only one trying.” I felt this, so so much. I’ve had many issues with my dad and step mom over the years. Issues I’ve contributed to. But I’m so tired of being the only one who’s expected to change

Look at how she edited her daughter's words. She basically took the reasons her daughter gave and reduced it to an audio cacophony with overly dramatic music and buzz words. She makes it obvious that she sees the daughter's explanations as "yadda yadda cry some more" instead of the sincerely written note it was.

I cut off contact with my toxic family years ago and I am so much happier without them. But like you said, it's either close attachment too soon or complete boundaries with others. Trying every day to break the toxic family patterns!
