'THEY'VE TAKEN TWO MAJOR GAMBLES!' | Assessing Liverpool's transfer window

The summer transfer window of 2026 has now come to a close, and so Andoni Iraola knows exactly what he has to work with across his first season in charge at Liverpool.

But should the Spaniard be happy? Or has he been left short in key areas?

Reds reporter David Lynch is here to assess the business done and the shape of the squad as a whole.

That includes focus on major gambles at right-back and in midfield, as well as enviable strength in depth up top.

Check out this analysis and don't forget to leave your thoughts on the window in the comment section below.

Is Liverpool's squad strong enough to challenge for trophies?

FSG have bought 3 players considered world class in their positions (Isak, Wirtz and Barcola) and acquired 2 of the most promising CBs around (in Leoni and Jacquet). They have hired a great coach. There are plenty of fine players (Gakpo, Allison, Macca, Gravenberch) and some with great promise (Rio, Nyoni). Give it time and the coach will put it together. Key is playing Wirtz as one of the top 3 with 3 proper midfielders.

Hi David, great update again but I don’t think we’re strong enough, the bench is not good enough and a few injuries it will make us very weak, hopefully no injuries YNWA

I like the optimism in this analysis and report. The current squad has terrific and magnificent players, some coming back from long-term injury and there's an exciting new coach. Hoping for the best!

Well said David, balanced as always

Liverpool have never replaced Fabinho , they tried with Caciedo, but nobody has filled his boots

Gomez started at right back before Trent came into the side I remember. he was good. Hopefully he'll be fit soon as he can fix that problem for a while.

Nice to see someone give a more balanced and positive view of the transfer window and team.

I think another thing to consider, which hasn't really been talked about much is the fact Iraola only signed a 2 year deal. Now, think about it. This season is to be considered a transition season for the team and coach, which is fair enough. Now let's move forward to next season where Alisson, VVD will leave, 2 massive gaping holes in the dressing room. Endo, Tsimi and Gomez all out of contract too, yes they will be less of a miss but still will need replaced. So what happens next transfer window? We already know we are a couple of players short, and then most likely lose another 5 players, so that's at least 7 new signings? I can't see that happening so expect the squad to be short again next summer, thus leaving Iraola in his 2nd year to be short on personnel again.

Finally a bit more balanced view on the squad.

It's the Liverpool we all know and love over the last 10 years. Going into a new season short in various positions. I'm happy with who we have brought in, all exciting players. Whereas I'm unhappy with who we haven't brought it.

In this time of change and in honoring our academy, a gamble worth taking. With a new manager, time, and patience, we deserve building the right way.

Good analysis David, I reckon we’ll be fine!

Always enjoy your analysis david👍
I would've personally targeted a long term rb this summer (porro, gusto etc), especially as frimpong's technical ability is borderline awful.

Interesting Analysis, We just need to get behind our team thick or thin.🔴

Hope we get the luck needed to win something this season

Thinking about things over past year is interesting. We have signed 1 RB, 3 CBs, (Leoni only played 80 minutes so is effectively a new signing this season) 4 forwards (plus Isak hardly played so is effectively a new signing this season and Ekitike was out half a season) plus Wirtz. Overall not a bad bunch as 9 quality players and, Fingers Crossed, we should have them all fit around New Year maybe that will be the best time to decide how good or bad things are.
