After an asteroid impacted Earth near the Drake Passage at a very low trajectory, Siberia, once a thriving land with numerous rivers and cities, became an icy desert forever (we discussed the mechanism of this cataclysm in the previous episode, #4 of our "17th Century Catastrophe" series). Meanwhile, a sandy desert emerged in Africa—the famous Sahara. Its origin remains one of the greatest mysteries.

Yet modern science acknowledges that in ancient times, the Sahara was once a sea, rivers, and forests, and the soil was fertile and cultivated. From history textbooks, we know that in ancient times, there were numerous Phoenician and Greek settlements there, cultivating agricultural fields, olive groves, and orchards. Numidian tribes herded vast herds of horses and, like the future nomads of Eurasia, were the best horsemen of the era. During the Roman Empire, until its final collapse in the mid-5th century, Africa was its breadbasket, supplying the capital and other major cities with grain, oil, and other products. But even later, Africa retained its importance and attracted the Vandals (who established a powerful state there), Emperor Justinian, who sought to restore the Roman Empire to its former borders, and then the Arabs. And such human behavior is inconsistent with the idea that North Africa already had the same desert climate we see today.

Roman Ivanov, author of "The Buried World: The Catastrophe of the 17th Century," explains when and how part of Africa was depopulated and the Sahara Desert emerged.
