The best exegesis of this outrageous, profound, disgusting, prodigious book. This was a great help in deciphering the code of this book, overcoming my initial befuddlement at this notoriously difficult text. Through all the fifth and sin of this book there is the most sacred, exquisite beauty.
i'm very grateful for Burgess's 'Here Comes Everybody: An introduction to James Joyce for the Ordinary Reader'. It gave me the head start I needed for reading Joyce.
Terrific! I first read Ulysses as an undergraduate, but never could gather the courage to tackle Finnegans Wake. Perhaps—60 years later—having seen this wonderful presentation, I’ll be inspired to give it a shot.
I have to confess that although I know of Anthony Burgess from “A Clockwork Orange” (having read it multiple times) and have heard of James Joyce, I never knew anything about Finnegan’s Wake. But this was absolutely fascinating - so much so I have watched this 4 times now!!
Joyce. Always the last to leave a good session. Always time for one last song. Most of his life spent without a pot to piss in. On the run from Landlords. I think I've rented rooms or flats, just a few doors away from where he'd stayed, about 3 times in my life, which shows ye how many kips he must have had to stay in.
I keep coming back to this as I'm completely fascinated by Joyce. The Wake is on my reading list along with A Skeleton Key to Finnegans Wake. Ive been completely in awe of JJ since reading Dubliners, Portrait & Ulysses. You could easily spend the rest of your days on earth studying his work
