Good god, you can’t even imagine this level of discussion on a talk show today.

I can’t believe after all these years, this is the first time I’ve seen him interviewed

A bit different from Graham Norton. "So Anthony, you wrote A Clockwork Orange - but you've got a story about blocking a hotel toilet, haven't you?"

I had no idea of this personal history behind the writing of a Clockwork Orange.  Wow.

I could absolutely imagine Burgess playing Alex's teacher in the film.

Russel Harty is the interviewer- a wonderful individual who knew when to listen and when to contribute

The story of his wife being robbed and beaten during WW2 is heartbreaking, and losing a child too :(

60 years ago we were still able to think and talk.

Burgess’s analysis has been strongly reflected in today’s social media. People are given the chance to form and express terrible opinions online without immediate consequences, which suggests that people can be evil and cruel. When given a choice between good and evil, many choose evil.

He was an accomplished composer too. Impressive character.

They were everywhere in the seventies you know, people who could express eloquently their own educated considered opinions in beautifully modulated  discourse.Funny, touching, worldly and wise all in one sentence .

Another brilliant example of just how far  we have fallen as a society in Britain. The intellectual depth of conversation that used to be readily available on British television has now been reduced to pure slop and that's reflective in our society. Heartbreaking

Anthony is absolutely spot on despite Hartys slightly condescending tone

🇬🇧 👍🏽 June 2026

His views on politicians have aged extremely well.

~

He uses Men as opposed to Man as a collective.  A double reverse switcheroo.  Respect to him and his wife.

Burgess was a true polymath!

"Anybody who likes to make love has no time for anything else." Anthony Burgess

''There is no point pretending that the privilege of thought is given to others and not ourselves.'' - Anthony Burgess.
WHOA! Shattered 99% of the world population's delusion with 1 line.

Must say have not come across this kind of high-level, sophisticated conversation and reflective thought on anything I have watched - any talk show, any movie, any series, any podcast or youtube video even  - since the series Chernobyl. Thank you to whoever posted this. You are reminding us of just how intellectually under-nourished we are.

I saw Kubrik's film, read the abreviated American edition and finally got to read the original. Anthony Burgess has been a longtime favorite author of mine ever since. Amazingly prolific. I despair of ever reading all his works.

He’s right about politicians in general: in public school, the successful students become CEOs, the average and less successful students become politicians. Because in becoming a politician, they can act like a CEO but not need to worry about losses because losses can be cancelled out by raising taxes.
