James Blunt was in the British military for 6 years prior to leaving to pursue a music career at almost 30. His family was in the military for generations. Very stoic and didn't express emotions verbally although the love was there. When his dad was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney disease and no one in the family was a match, James Blunt wrote the song as a tribute to his dad for himself and his children. He refused to clean up the crying in the video because he wanted it to stand as a tribute to his father who was at the end stage of life. A distant cousin in Australia saw the video and came forward and was a match. This video was around 2019 and his dad is still alive in 2026 thanks to this video. I believe he donated the proceeds to a British charity for former military veterans. Thanks for your review and sharing your thoughts and experiences ♥️ James Blunt writes a lot of life experiences. He had no Bravery from the first album Back to Bedlam "No Bravery and Carry You Home from the second album All the Lost Souls. He was deployed to Kosovo and they reflect his experiences. The live video showing his video diary in the back ground is the one to watch. The Girl That Never Was also a personal experience. So many written from the human experience and not with a hit in mind are a beautiful painful hit to the heart and soul.

This one always takes me out whew 😭 I’m sorry for your loss. I feel the same about my mama. She was taken like a thief in the night far too young 😞 . It’s been 13 years now. Seems like yesterday and forever all at the same time. You did great with your grandmother Sir. Thank you for entrusting us and sharing 🤍. Much love to ya and the fam here too of course 🫶🙏🏻
there's a story behind "we're just two grown men saying goodbye". james and his father were both in the military. when they would deploy, they would (instead of saying goodbye) say, "we're just two grown men saying goodbye. james added it to this song to make it even more personal for his dad. i was really confused for a long time until someone explained it in the comments of another reaction.
Thank you for your reaction video. You are a good man, with a good heart. If you appreciated this song, James has another beautiful and touching song, also based on a personal experience he had to work through. It is called "the Girl who Never Was". If you get a chance, I think you would like it as well. Wishing you a good day.
God bless you sir for your thoughts. About 20 years ago my dad told me don't grow old. I asked him 5 years later what he meant. Said he was tired of asking his friends to pick him up when he fell. I understood a few years later after we lost him. Sucks growing older. 69 from Northern Michigan!
Ed Sheeran does a similar song called Super Market Flowers except it’s about his mom but it gives the same feeling. It’s beautiful as well. 😊❤️ Great reaction and thank you for sharing your life stories. Sending prayers!
Thanks for the reaction video, keep up the good work! The close up of the face reminds me of Sinead O'Connor "Nothing Compares to You", if you haven't done a reaction to that, i would be curious on your reaction to that as well!
