"We have one obscure trick up our sleeves"
Phew, I was worrying whole video would pass by without mentioning an obscure trick.

This video contains the most detailed breakdown of like... three consecutive frames of gameplay, that you will ever hear in your life. I love it.

(also, glad to have a tiny contribution to the overall experience of this video, even if it was only for a couple seconds of footage of a strat that didn't even come close to the amount of necessary speed!)

This community is off the walls insane and I wouldn't have it any other way

“Could we cancel the bonk by landing on the fly guy?”
Top ten questions only masterminds can answer

"Clips used with permission from: bad_boot"
I mean, I would sure hope so.

This entire video: Thankfully we have this obscure trick... too bad it doesn't work the way we need it to... Thankfully we have this obscure trick....

SM64 community deserves a lot of praise for finding all this crazy tech. Its insane how much a game's mechanics can be deconstructed.

All of this and you haven't collected a single star. In fact you had to deliberately avoid doing so.

This is surreal.

From the thumbnail, I expected some dumb parody of pannenkoek. I appreciate you taking this seriously and respecting the audience while explaining everything very well.

Thanks, and keep it up!

nintendo tricked us when they told us mario was a platformer. its actually a puzzle game.

shoutouts to stickman for making me copypaste this comment again very epic man

What blows my mind as a 3D artist is that this is only possible because of a single improper normal calculation. All because that ledge wall's normal was a couple units slanted. I always tell myself "oh nobody would ever notice a single improper vertice or normal"; but imagine being the person who made that wall and finding out 2 decades later that a single improper normal is responsible for such a monumental TAS. This video is beautiful.

I could watch videos like this all day. Absolutely amazing execution and explanation.

"Cancel the bonk" is a phrase that will never leave me now

Building up speed to travel through parallel universes to reach a specific destination was not optimal enough. Instead, we must trick the laws of the universe into believing that we are actually grabbing a ledge by building up so much speed we phase through the castle and end up hitting a wall a few rooms over. However, the performance of this action requires that we be in a specific location, and reaching this location actually makes us build up too much speed, so we need a way to build up a precise amount of speed while being able to freely control our velocity so that we can rocket ourselves to our destination. And we need to do all of that without collecting any of those things we even play the game for in the first place.

These videos are always incredible. Good work for explaining everything going on here, very entertaining

Star Door: You need the power of 8 stars to open the this door.
Mario: Let me in in...
            LET ME IN!!!!

Index of glitches/techniques exhibited in this run:

0:00 Introduction (why this is being done on N64 vs Wii VC)
1:37 Sliding Speed: a type of movement speed that can be exploited to allow Mario to pause exit a level without losing his regular speed
3:18 Glitchy Ledge Grab: allows Mario to grab the ledge by the secret aquarium entrance, the final step to entering the goal level
4:53 Text Redirection: allows arbitrary redirection of Mario's movement while moving at high speed. Used to obtain the precise angle needed for the GLG during high speed lobby movement
6:53 Shell Hyperspeed [Unused; insufficient speed/inaccessible in BBB]: lets Mario gain high speed by moving backwards on a Koopa shell
7:52 C^ Slide: stops Mario from sliding down slopes, allowing him to gain high speed by sliding. Used to clip through Bowser star door (via pause exit to lobby from BBB), granting access to SSL
10:06 Hyperspeed Punching: lets Mario gain unlimited speed under specific positioning conditions. Gives Mario the speed required for lobby movement
11:23 Crouch sliding: a property of pressing Z (crouch) that allows 1 frame to lapse before speed from HSP is lost; also lets Mario turn slightly to avoid accidentally traveling out of bounds
12:40 Special properties of bonking (speed is not lost until the 2nd frame of bonking; there's a 1 frame window to cancel the bonk without losing speed)
13:27 10k Glitch: allows Mario to instantly gain/lose large amounts of speed while in a sliding state (in this case, lose)
14:41 Special properties of Koopa shells: Pressing Z on the first frame Mario steps on a Koopa shell allows him to enter a crouch slide, regardless of whether the shell is on the ground or not
16:03 Special properties of fire: when Mario is on fire, he won't lose speed while he's in the air, and he won't bonk
17:44 HOLP: Held Object's Last Position, the xyz coordinates of the last object that left Mario's hands. Normally updates every time Mario throws or releases a held item
18:58 Hat-in-hand glitch [unused; wing cap can't be unlocked at this point]: forces Mario to carry his hat instead of his actual held object. Method of preventing the HOLP from updating
19:07 Pause Buffered Hitstun: prevents Mario's thrown object from rendering, thus stopping the HOLP from updating. Used to remotely throw a bob-omb at the block containing the Koopa shell
19:35 Cloning: lets Mario hold objects (including things normally unholdable, like goombas), and by throwing them, creates a "clone" of that object at the HOLP
20:25 Holding an enlarged bob-omb pushes Mario backwards, allowing faster movement
22:37 Crouch-releasing a cloned item: puts clone at Mario's height (z coordinate), but at HOLP's xy coordinates. Used to place fire clone directly above Koopa shell clone
22:55 Shy Guy Manipulation: abusing enemy behavior to move Shy Guy to a specific location, in this case, directly underneath the spot Mario will bonk, canceling it and preserving speed

Let me know if I missed any/corrections. Amazing vid, thanks to everyone involved from TASers to production

To think that the arguably most clever A press save strategy in SM64 just got obsoleted today…absolutely incredible. Marbler is getting banned tho.

At this point, this game must be one of the most well understood pieces of software in history (of its size at least).

I've been following the ABC for 6 years now, and this one star really does feel like a culmination of efforts

Great presentation dude, sick stuff

Incredible work - after so much effort, it's great to see such an incredible result, both in the strat itself & the commentary!

Here before it goes viral
