Do you use an OM-1 Mark II camera? Is it your only camera or do you use it alongside another? I'd love to hear your thoughts on the camera and also if you have any suggestions on the couple of minor struggles (100% magnification and using the timer with bracketed shots) I had on my very first shoot.

I own and use both systems, Nikon and OM, and love them all. And I worked years with Sony. But the Fun Factor in OM Cameras is simply unbeatable, and I use the system 90% of the time lately.

As a Wayne to Wayne I appreciate your thoughtfulness and approach. I just one day before seeing your video decided to sell my Z9, Z8 and Nikon lenses and I’m going to the OM system. One big push was the new 50-300 f2.8, but the weight, portability, and cost were also factors. The one good thing is by selling my Nikon gear I am just about able to cover the cost of the 150-400f4.5, the 12-40 f2.8, macro lens, and the aforementioned 50-200 when it comes available. There are some cons to going micro 4/3’s, but the benefits outweigh them. Thanks again for letting me know that my thing was not too far off base.

I am a wildlife photographer (retired pro now in my early 70's) and moved from Canon to OM 5 yearw ago. I would say that if I were to only shoot landscapes I would probably still shoot FF as the gear is pretty small and light these days and I like the extra Mp of my R5 (45 vs 20) .
However, for me, all the size and weight benefit comes when you shoot e.g birds. With MFT you get a smaller package once you get away from the big prime lenses of other manufacturers. They are superb but so heavy, cumbersome, a nightmare to fly with and require a tripod to lug around too. Even a 1.4 extender on Canon is a big lump compared to the tiny OM converter that slips in any pocket.
The MFT extra DOF you get for the same aperture can be an advantage. If you can't get a smooth background with a long lens you need to move your feet.
That said, the 150-400mm f4.5 that I use for birds plus the OM1 mkii weighs about the same as my Canon R5 plus 100-500 that I still keep.

If I want to travel lighter (eg flying abroad) I will take the OM 300mm f4 and 1.4x.  I compared this with the Canon 500mm f4 mk1 before I switched and there is no IQ difference. Yes the big prime gives you smoother backgrounds under many circumstances but you soon adapt.

The noise performance at high ISO on the MFT can never be as good as FF but used in conjunction with latest noise reduction software it is no hardship.  
Using the 2x lens length mentality for reach calculations ignores the fact that that if the FF has double the megapixels you can crop twice as hard in post. So probably no true  reach advantage vs the high MP FF. However, what matters more is the enjoyment you get using the equipment and also the results. When I go out with my R5 I usually come back with super portraits. When I take the OM I , I usually come back with loads of action shots thanks to the 50fps frame rate, slightly better Af and Procapture that I can not do without now. For landscape you have the High res shot mode and inbuilt ND filters that I don't use but they are advaced features that apparently work really well.

The new cameras like the R5 mkII are catching up with features at last but it has taken them years to achive it at a much higher cost.
You have done the right thing and tried the OM System and you have discovered for yourself that it is the system for you. Enjoy it - I'm sure you will and your body will thank you too.

Great video, beautiful photographs.  Appreciate your approach to this decision.  I am amazed at the amount of thought, analysis, deliberation, etc. that people put into into a system decision.  Considering that the baseline capabilities of all systems are so incredibly good, the differences really do not matter for 99% of people's needs, and honestly, the other 1% are just kidding themselves.  Subbed!

Wayne, can ask what tripod it is you’ve got the OM1m2 on at around 9:55 please? (Looks like PD but which specific model?)

Did you ever fathom out the 2-sec timer / bracket thing?

I thoroughly enjoyed your video Wayne. I switched from the Sony A7R V (61MP) to the OM 1 Mark II (20MP) about 4-5 months ago and I have rarely if ever noticed any difference in the clarity of the images. I am, however, only an enthusiastic amateur and not a professional like yourself. Furthermore, I am not a pixel peeper. If the photo/print looks good enough to put on the wall, it’s good enough for me. I now have the OM camera 1MarK II camera, OM 12-40mm f2.8 lens, OM 40-150mm f2.8 lens and the OM 100-400mm 5-6.3mm II for wildlife. These three relatively light and very compact lenses are more than adequate for all my needs. I love the system, especially, some of the computational modes, such as the focus stacking, live GND and occasionally the high res mode (my main reason for changing from my Sony to OM was because of the huge memory space taken up by Sony). I also tend to take the camera with me more often now especially on family outings because it is so light and compact. I wish you all the best with OM system and I have just subscribed to your channel to follow your progress👍👍. Henry

Glad I found your channel — such a refreshing change from all the “look at me” YouTube videos out there. I’m in a similar boat: I use a Fuji GFX and large-format film, but the size, versatility, and portability of of OM1 setup really stand out.

Thanks for taking the time to film this. I’m actually thinking about going the other way, from m4/3 to FF but as you’ve put nicely there are trade offs especially when hiking. The m4/3 has some brilliant benefits and some small challenges, and is often discounted.

Thank you for this Wayne. From someone like you who has used Full Frame, Medium format and APSc cameras I believe you speak with authority. I have an OM 1 and a 12-40 f2.8 pro lens version 1 and am very happy with it. I am fortunate to be able to have full frame and APSC cameras as well and I mainly use micro four thirds due to its size, weight and IBIS advantages plus excellent pro lenses.

What an incredibly detailed video and if I hadn’t already moved to the OM1mk2 it would have seriously impacted my decision.

Hi Wayne. Just found your channel. Great video. Stunning shots and a very well balanced analysis. I’m fed up watching camera reviews that just script tech specs which are rarely relevant for most use cases. It’s the old adage that a good photographer can take a good picture with an old camera.  Composition more important than  all these specs. I’ve got canon kit for studio, Sony for video, Fuji for family walks. Each is strong for these purposes. However like you I enjoy hill walking but Sony and canon far too heavy to haul around. I was up hiking near Spean Bridge recently and took an old Olympus OM 1 film camera with some ektachrome 160. Great experience and made me appreciate the process and the small form factor more than specs. Seriously looking at OM 1 ii now. Thanks again. Stephen subd!!!
