Now THIS is a class glow up

“But you can only use Stunning Strike once per turn now” shut up nerd, the adults are talking.

I love this explanation: "intelligence is knowing that a tomato is a fruit, but wisdom is knowing that you don't serve a tomato in a fruit salad."

i played a level 6 elemental grappler monk for a one-shot, and it was the singular most fun i’ve ever had with DND combat. i was a full on battlefield controller who was moving in and around the battlefield and carrying foes into flanked situations or throwing off of cliffs. i didn’t feel OP and did way less damage than our party barbarian, but I felt like i had so many good play options

I'm so excited to FINALLY be excited about playing a Monk!!

In terms of character ideas, it is worth noting that Plato was both an accomplished Olympic wrestler (technically, they were called the Isthmian Games in his time) and philosopher.

Can you imagine your character, a schoolteacher, pinning the BBEG down to the ground and then lecturing them on ethics? You can even literally rake them over the coals for answering wrong.

Cool trick with Warrior of Mercy that i have found. If you do take the Grappler Feat and the Speedy feat you become a godlike Combat Medic, able to "Grapple" your friends and carry them to safety easily. Basically the film "Hacksaw Ridge" 😉

So many classes to play but monks always pull me back in.

The glow up of 2024 that was well deserved. Playing a dhampir warrior if mercy monk in a campaign atm and it absolutley fucking slaps, figuritvly and literally.

deflect attacks makes me think of "inner peace" from kung fu panda 2 where po catches the fireworks and throws them back at the boats

This is the one I've been waiting for.  I was one of the oddballs who liked the 2014 Monk, but I'm so excited about the 2024 changes.

I was typing about monks being The Flash just as Monty said it, lol.

Monk is really looking good.  They seem really strong and I like that a lot.

17:13 reminds me of that scene in kung fu panda where tai lung is escaping his prison and he deflects that one ballista bolt with his claws and kicks it back destroying the ballista. He's basically a high level 2024 monk lol.

I've been playing a 2014 elements monk in our campaign (it's going about as well as you can imagine) and our DM told us in the next couple sessions there will be an in game event, that allows us to completely rebuild our sheet with the new rules. I'm so excited to ACTUALLY be a decent elements monk that attacks with a variety of elemental damage! I will also be carrying around throwing axes, to compliment the extra range on unarmed strikes and I'm SERIOUSLY SO EXCITED. I imagine my bronze dragon born monk, strapped with a dozen throwing axes all over his body, throwing axes and following up with hadukens and flame whips and water blasts. So awesome

I love the RP implications from using Deflect Energy on Vicious Mockery. "I'm rubber, and you're... GLUE!"

I loved the quirky 2014 Monk, but the 2024 Monk takes everything I loved in 2014 and made it better. Including Stunning Strike. Hear me out.

A lot of people complain that Stunning Strike has been reduced to 1/turn. But with the abundance of ways to get advantage in the Monk's inherent kit and obvious feat choices, not to mention strip foes of reactions and push and drag them around, you hardly even feel it.

Meanwhile, they can now use a Dragonhide Belt midfight to replenish Focus points and still have an attack that turn. Shadow Monks can now lay down Darkness or Silence and still do damage that turn. Mechanically, new Monk is the most exciting martial in 2024 for me, and that's wild since they don't inherently have weapon mastery.

As for flavor? Like you Dudes say in the video, there's so many possible options. One of my personal favourites has always been Neo or Morpheus from the Matrix, both of whom definitely demonstrate some Monk techniques.

Just FYI, Quivering Palm came first, by decades. We had that in AD&D 1st ed.

It was also there in the 1985 Masters Rules (Black Box) D&D Mystic.

I really hope we get a remastered Kensei Monk to take more advantage of that dual wielding build Monty mentioned. I bet you that one could give weapon masteries with it so it could be interesting for this build.

Since the rules, my current monk is a Goliath, elements monk named Jamal. Took cloud ancestry and I'm all over the battlefield!

Great breakdown. Surprised Tough was not mentioned as an origin feat. It seems to address the biggest need of a Monk, given the low hit die and potentially 14 CON. Tavern Brawler I don't think is that worth it because half of it is redundant with what the Monk already does. So it's just Push and re-rolling 1s. Certainly fine, but probably not as helpful as raw survivability. It's the Grappler feat that really unlocks physical play for the Monks.

Oh man, I can't wait to play a Shadow monk with a Fighter Dip to get up to 5 attacks with advantage in a round at level 5 (6 attacks at 11)  with Nick and flurry of blows. Ninja fantasy, here I come!
