"There was nothing but hope here."
The 184-day festival came to a close on October 13th.
Prior to the opening, the Osaka-Kansai Expo was dominated by concerns about "delays in preparation" and "waste of tax money," and national momentum was slow to build. However, the event opened with over 25 million visitors, and projected operating income and expenditures of up to ¥28 billion in the black. The anti-fans gradually disappeared, and people of all ages and genders shared the same space, engulfed in excitement at the "festival."
At the center of it all was Yoichi Ochiai's pavilion, "null²." Long lines formed every day, despite the odds of winning a spot being only a few percent. For those who were unable to attend, this time we will be revealing the full story of what went on behind the scenes. Yoichi Ochiai, who has been involved in the Expo since its bid and spent the better part of his 30s working on it, explains how he views the significance of holding a global event in Japan in this day and age.
"We need 'purposeless festivals.'"
What were the scenes that signaled signs of change in Japan? What was the international cooperation that emerged everywhere? And what does the end of the Expo mean?
Before returning to null², Yoichi Ochiai sums up this "turning point in an era."
