Yayoi Kusama, the avant-garde artist from Matsumoto City, passed away on August 14th at a hospital in Tokyo. She was 97 years old. Kusama created original works featuring colorful polka dots and countless expanding net patterns, and received international acclaim, including the Order of Culture. SBC produced the documentary program "Infinite Proliferation: The Soul of Yayoi Kusama" in 2005. As a tribute, they will broadcast a partially re-edited version of the program.

[Program Summary] Yayoi Kusama, an avant-garde artist from Matsumoto City, has gained worldwide recognition. From a young age, she suffered from obsessive-compulsive disorder, experiencing hallucinations and auditory hallucinations on a daily basis. The only way she found to survive was to confront these experiences, observe them thoroughly, and overcome them by painting them. Leaving her conservative hometown behind, Kusama traveled alone to America, where she was celebrated for her painting "White Infinite Rope," which she created in extreme poverty. The two motifs of an endlessly repeating "net" and "polka dots" were sublimated into various forms of expression such as painting, sculpture, and installation, eventually leading to her growth into a world-renowned artist. Currently, Kusama lives in a hospital room in Shinjuku, Tokyo, and continues to paint in her small studio. In addition to interviewing Kusama about her current activities and life, the program will highlight the world of this unique artist's work by quoting from her autobiography.
