“We were going to the Kyiv region for training. We didn’t think there would be fighting. We thought it was just a muscle-up. Later, our commander arrived and said there would be a Russian invasion. We set up anti-tank mines, and in the morning it all started.”
In February 2022, in the first hours and days of the full-scale Russian invasion, a company-tactical group of paratroopers of the 80th separate infantry brigade did everything possible to delay the enemy’s advance in the Chernobyl zone. Later, the fighters fought the occupiers on the outskirts of the capital: Gostomel, Bucha, and Vorzel. The actions and self-sacrifice of the paratroopers, on a par with other units of the Ukrainian Defense Forces, allowed us to gain time and bring up more significant forces to stop the Russians and further liberate the Kyiv region from the enemy.
This video tells the story of the first week of the Russian invasion of 2022 into the Kyiv region through the eyes of the paratroopers of the 80th brigade. These memories are a small part of modern Ukrainian military history and evidence of the struggle for statehood and the survival of our nation.
Hundreds opposed thousands, and the understanding that the enemy was trying to capture the capital forced the Galician paratroopers to forget about fatigue, serious injuries and the loss of their brothers in arms.
