Anti-illegal immigration activist Nkosikhona "Phakel'umthakathi" Ndabandaba and the March and March civic organization have threatened to halt asylum application processing at the Department of Home Affairs' Refugee Reception Centre on Che Guevara Road in Durban.

This follows a Constitutional Court ruling that South Africa's asylum system must reopen to new applicants.

In light of the ruling, Home Affairs says Refugee Reception Offices is now accepting applications from everyone, including people who entered the country without a visa.

The number of asylum seekers at the Durban centre has increased drastically, with foreign nationals, mainly from Ethiopia, Somalia, Bangladesh and Pakistan, queuing to have their applications processed.
