Raise your hand if you never heard of this movie until you saw Get Shorty , and now it's one of your fav movies 🖐

They re‑cut Touch of Evil and took 40 minutes out of Ambersons. That’s art we’ll never get back. When you see what Welles did with full freedom on Citizen Kane, you can only imagine what his films - and his whole career - could’ve been if the studios had just let him work. TY!

Touch of Evil was the first Welles' film I watched and it led me to purchase blu-rays of every other film he directed.  It's been an incredible experience!

gorgeous cinematography and I love the subtle interplay between Dietrich and Welles in the film

" Interfere with the artists vision at your peril ", this should be emblazoned on a Large neon sign over the executives Boardroom, perhaps one day they will take heed of its essential message. Welles was a Genius at many things, so many who worked with him and knew him knew this, all we can do is thank Mr Welles for his brilliance, artistry and vision. He was right too about how he would be been remembered. He was a one off, a " lightning in a bottle " guy. A one-off. (Love Touch of Evil, I watched the restored version again last night, it still impresses on many levels).

The 1998 Walter Murch reconstruction of A Touch of Evil is a masterpiece. He edited it according to Welles’ 58 page memo and is the definitive version now.

great documentary. i love that film so much. welles is the greatest american artist of all time.

Heston's imitation of Welles is pretty good, and there's a bunch to commend about this vid.
Great to see & hear,thanks .

one of my 13 all time favorite films and 2 all time favorite noirs
Bid thanks for this post. I learned so much and enjoyed every second of it. I read Peter's book with Welles and could not put it down. I LOVE Welles' films and have the upmost respect for his  perseverance dealing with what the criminal studios did to so many of his films

Great Stuff!  Thanks.

It's such a shame what Hollywood did to Orson Welles. We should have so many more masterpieces. He wasn't a Kubrick or Malick with self-imposed periods between films. And what the studios did to his films is awful. The man was probably the biggest genius in acting since Shakespeare. Sad he had to spend so much of his time and energy fundraising, but thankfully, some of that included doing commercials, and their wonderful outtakes. 😂 That opening scene...

Edited to add a quick comment on Dennis Weaver's performance. Boy, did he take some chances there. Certainly memorable.

The studio not only ruined the film, it ruined the man. As we know, Welles and his career were never the same. The horror.

Such a wild movie. I think it helps to watch this movie with a little green leafy material at hand...  thanks Serious Feather!

thanks so much, one of my favorites. it will be interesting to see how the AI reconstruction of Ambersons turns out. cheers

Windward and Pacific in Venice, California

This film is much better to me than citizen Kane, great movie, perfect noir. The plot is morality and how we perceive it. I think. ❤

Utterly fascinating, but Heston is like an installation in a sequoia heritage park. Peak Henson.

Actually, that sound design that Walter Murch and George Lucas discuss occurs in John Ford's My Darling Clementine--though not in the beginning of the film.

Great film. I heard that Heston tried to get it at Cannes, but it never happened.  Me and my friends always debated on the motel scene with Janet Leigh.

It's really interesting how Wells' shot it. You can feel the tension and dread. Now, some people say that Susan Vargas was sexually assaulted, some say she wasn't, some say Wells' left it up to the audience, mainly because of the Hayes Code. There was a limit to what you could show and say on film.

I actually think it's both. We know that Quinlan wants to frame Susan for Gardi's murder. Gardi was Vargas to back off, so I'm guessing he wants to drug up his wife, to make it seem like she's a addict, to discredit Vargas, but there's another player.

One of the gang members. Right away, she's targeted by one of the gang members, probably on Gardi's orders. He gets offended by her calling him Pancho, that's a first red flag.

He steps into the shot when a guy takes her picture, the one next to the woman and baby. Later on, someone gives her a note that says,"A picture is worth a million kisses" it's the picture of her and the gang member.

Also, he spies on her getting undressed from across the way, with a flashlight. This shows a twisted desire, she is an attractive woman.

Then the hotel scene. The butch female gang member says,"I want to stay, I want to watch". The other gang member says '"Hold her legs". To shoot her up with heroin, but there's other things.

She ends up naked with no clothes, why? You didn't need to take her clothes off, to frame her for taking drugs.

I think the gang members followed Gardi's orders, but also did their own thing. The gang leader was offended by Susan's nickname, and you can tell he had a thing for her.

I wonder if any cast member has addressed this? All in all great movie and great video! Enjoy the 4k. I might have to pick one up.

Im amazed,  none of the  "film makers" didn't see alot of Alfred Hitchcock,  in wells?
The don't show everything method.    allows the audience  to think,  a glimpse.  like seeing through a picket fence as you move by at a certain speed.
