I'm surprised I haven't seen this take more. The outfits in the comics were made both with a different cultural context and with different considerations compared to the movies
As someone who didn't know anything about Marvel when The Avengers came out, Hawkeye didn't even register to me as an Avenger, he was just some random guy. Having a proper costume would probably have remedied this.
I honestly believe the current "Comic Accuracy" discourse is a direct effect of what I like to call "The Pendulum". Studios spend literal decades trying to avoid classic designs and being embarrassed of their comicbook origins, so now fans feel the only way to fix it is to go the complete opposite way, but they end up overcorrecting and getting to an equally radical point.
Getting a bit off-topic here, but I'm honestly worried about how people these days are seemingly incapable of accepting a middle point, everything seems white or black with no in-betweens.
Your absolutely right. At the core of any comic book movie, is that they're adaptations. You can never 100% replicate the medium of print into the film medium. What it comes down to. Is if the people making it want to honor the original stories or not. Like when Peter Jackson said he made the TLOTR trilogy without letting any personal feelings influencing his decisions. That he only wanted to honor Tolkien
Just lean into the vibrant colors for Hawkeye. I like the edit, but adding gloves and swapping the black sections of his suit for blue would hit the spot. As for Iron Man, taking a few more cues on the mask shape and color scheme would go a long way. I really liked the colorful approach in superman 2025 that is what the DCU has done so well, it felt ripped straight from the comics while still grounding itself in reality not minding being a little cheesy. Live action superhero projects do not need to prioritize total realism. Also, this channel is a total hidden gem, 13 subscribers is criminal, consider me the 14th😝😝
I think something that also has to be taken into account is how you choose to adapt the characters
For example, Hawkeye in traditional media was a circus performer when he first took on the Hawkeye identity and joined the circus of crime. In that continuity, it makes perfect sense for him to wear a bright colorful costume, regardless of its live action or animation. Circus performers are supposed to be very visible and eye catching.
In the movie continuity however, Clint is seemingly not a former circus performer and is just highly discipline soldier who doesn’t want to be in the spotlight, so his uniform is more tactical and appearance, pulling inspiration from the ultimate Marvel continuity
Whether you prefer comic aesthetic or his movie aesthetic, they are too very different takes on the character and their designs reflect that
Idk, Hawkeye in the Earths Mightiest Heroes cartoon looked rad. Instead od purple and blue they just made him two different shades of purple. You can probably make that work idk.
Also let's not pretend Spider-Man doesn't look gorgeous in that commercial
I feel like a good example like what you were talking about for Hawkeye is his Series suit with the comic inspired mask would be perfect for the semi realistic look.
It also just depends on the character aswell. Characters like Spider-man, Superman, and Batman have had pretty accurate adapted designs incorporating the iconic elements in different ways on both ends of the Comic-realism spectrum. Especially spidey and Supes.
A last thing to note like Iron Man for the mcu was directly inspired by his extremis armor and modular Armor designs.
3:45 Id prefer the purple glasses like Ultimate spiderman. It would convey that his eyes are important so he keeps them safe from debris, wind exposer and sun glare
The Hawkeye series was such a wasted opportunity. They had a whole subplot about Hawkeye befriending a group of larping nerds that love designing over the top medieval costumes, then they hyped up that Clint is getting a "crazy" new costume, that he's a bit embarrassed of, but decides to wear it to motivate Kate. And then comes the big reveal... It's a black sweater with a purple square. And what drives me insane is that THAT COSTUME WAS ALREADY BASED ON THE MCU VERSION OF HAWKEYE. Like David Aja designed that costume based on the way Hawkeye looked in the first Avengers movie SO WHAT WAS THE POINT
You can easily make a suit that's comic accurate and work realistically like iron man example it's literally high tech suit that can use lighter metals to be thinner more form fitting. The slits just glass lining protecting and sealing his eyes and mouth
The Comic Accuracy problem isn’t just exclusive to the costumes… most of the biggest Superhero movies aren’t even accurate to the comics, but are still well-liked by the silent majority.
The only superhero movies that are comic accurate, would usually have to go with the straight to video movies.
