I went to Maizuru after hearing stories about the repatriation.
Apparently, 660,000 people returned to Maizuru in the 11 years since the end of the war 81 years ago. I think I was able to see and feel, with my own eyes, the scenery and atmosphere, what those people must have felt when they returned to Maizuru.
I'm ashamed of myself for knowing so little about the repatriation and Siberian internment until now, but I'm grateful to the person who gave me the opportunity to visit this place and learn even a little about it.
On the train home, I immediately watched the movie "From the Gulag with Love." A few years ago, I gave up on the original book, "Last Will and Testament from the Gulag," after only a few pages, but I pulled it out of the closet thinking I could read it all the way through now.
