(Hoover Dam) — From the Top of the Dam to the Lake

Walking the Hoover Dam & Cruising Lake Mead by Boat. You're not gonna believe how massive this thing really is until you're standing right on top of it. Today we're at Hoover Dam — one of the most jaw-dropping engineering achievements in American history — and we're doing it ALL. We walk across the top of the dam, check out the historic signs, and get a firsthand look at the current water level of Lake Mead. Spoiler alert: it's a story all by itself.
Then we ride the elevator DOWN into the belly of the beast to see the massive power plant that still lights up the Southwest to this day. And if that's not enough, we hop on a boat and cruise Lake Mead right up to the face of the dam. That view from the water? HECK YEAH, it'll give you chills.
Whether you've been here before or it's on your bucket list, this one's going to make you feel like you're right there with me. Grab a seat and let's go!

Can't help but think about the scene where Clark Griswold was standing on the edge of the dam after walking through the door that went outside 😂. Thanks for being our dam tour guide Russ😂!.👍

In 1999 I flew from DFW to Vegas on an early (6:30am) flight, rented a car, and drove out to the dam. I had pre-ordered a tour of the dam. But when I got there, I decided to upgrade to the "Hard Hat" Tour. It was worth it to go inside the dam in areas that the shorter tour does not take you. My Hard Hat tour was the last one of the day, and our guide spent extra time with us, beyond the hour tour.

After the tour, on the way driving back Vegas, I saw a billboard advertising a night club show with Don Rickles. So I went to that evening show. I was going to play the slots at the hotel where Don Rickles performed, but after the show, the slots in the lobby were now in a thick haze of cigarette smoke, so I opted out of that.

Earlier I had found an economical Motel to stay at. The next morning I headed back to the airport.

Did you know that during WW2 our government built crows nests in the rocks on both sides of the dam? Equipped with anti-aircraft weapons for fear they'd be bombed. We saw one years ago. Sell well camouflage most people don't even know that they are still there. Blasted into rock. Another fun fact of Hoover dam. Doesn't look good for rain this year. Can only pray. Thanks, fun tour.😊

This sure brings back memories. My now ex-husband and I lived in the Phoenix area and we honeymooned in Las Vegas. It was my first trip to Nevada, and the traffic across Hoover Dam was bumper to bumper. A lot has changed over the years, and I scratched Vegas off my bucket list for good in 2015. Las Vegas has become too expensive for the average middle class visitor, and driving across the bypass isn't as much fun as driving across the dam..
