What if the thing you’ve been calling your high standards is actually keeping you stuck?

In Episode 62 of The Mojo School Podcast, I’m joined by the wonderful Jane Shires for a beautifully open conversation about perfectionism, where it comes from, how it shows up in our everyday lives — and what happens when we finally give ourselves permission to be gloriously imperfect.

Jane brings a fascinating perspective to this conversation through her experience working in education as a SENCO specialist, her journey as a parent, and her own personal experience of recognising and unravelling perfectionist patterns.

We explore the roots beneath perfectionism: the need to get things “right”, fear of getting things wrong, people pleasing, comparison, expectations, and the ways our nervous system can learn that being perfect feels safer than being seen making mistakes.

And, importantly, we talk about what actually helps.

In this episode we explore:

✨ Why perfectionism isn't always the positive trait we think it is
✨ Where perfectionist patterns can begin
✨ How perfectionism can affect children, parents, education and adult life
✨ The difference between striving for excellence and being paralysed by perfection
✨ Why self-awareness and compassion matter more than simply telling ourselves to “stop
    overthinking”
✨ Jane's experience of beginning to recognise these patterns in herself
✨ Some of our favourite practical tools for fellow perfectionists in recovery
✨ Why sometimes done, messy and human really is better than perfect

We also wander into some of the people, podcasts and ideas that have helped Jane along the way, including Peter Crone and Mel Robbins.

And there's a particularly lovely moment in this conversation where Jane shares some of her own experience of working with me and the deeper personal work we've been exploring together. ❤️

If you've ever procrastinated because you couldn't do something perfectly, rewritten the same thing seventeen times, worried excessively about getting it wrong, struggled to let other people do things their way, or set yourself standards you'd never dream of demanding from somebody you love...

This one's for you.

Welcome to the imperfect club. We're recovering. 😉
